The University of Wisconsin-Whitewater men's and women's track and field teams each defeated two scholarship schools Saturday at the season-opening Karl Schlender Invitational at Kachel Fieldhouse in the Williams Center.
The men, currently No. 4 in the United States Track and Field and Cross Country Coaches Association NCAA Division III National Computer Rankings, totaled 238.33 points to outpace Division I UW-Milwaukee and NAIA foe Judson (Ill.).
The women finished with 248 points to finish ahead of the same two teams.
Junior captain
Parker Witt (Appleton, Wis./Appleton North) won two events to lead the men, claiming the 60-meter dash in 6.87 seconds and the 200-meter dash in 22.26 seconds. His 60 time currently ranks No. 1 in NCAA Division III and was just eight-hundredths of a second from a school record, and his mark in the 200 currently ranks among the top five in the nation.
Junior captain
Theron Baumann (Monona Grove, Wis./Monona Grove) placed first in the shot put with a toss of 53-07.50 (16.34 meters), good for a top-five national mark. Senior
Levi Perry (East Moline, Ill./United Township) cemented his spot atop the national weight throw list with a career-best 60-04.50 (18.40 meters).
In his first meet as a Warhawk, senior
DuVaun Goodlow (Plainfield, Ill./Central) tallied a top five national mark with a high jump of 6-08.75 (2.05 meters), good for first in the event.
On the women's side, sophomore
Celeste Madda (Crystal Lake, Ill./Central) enjoyed a strong 2017 debut, running a 7.87 in the 60-meter dash, good for first in the event and third in the nation. She also won the 200-meter dash with a 25.94, also good for a top five national mark.
Senior
Meredith Porter (Hales Corners, Wis./Whitnall) won the 400-meter dash with a time of 58.81, which currently stands second in the nation. Freshman
Abbie Felton (Burlington, Wis./Shoreland Lutheran) placed second with a 59.11, good for fourth in the nation so far.
The UW-Whitewater men and women continue action next Saturday at the NAIA Challenge at Olivet Nazarene University in Bourbonnais, Ill. Competition is scheduled to begin at 10 a.m.
