The University of Wisconsin-Whitewater women's tennis team won its 73rd consecutive match against a Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference opponent Friday afternoon, downing UW-Eau Claire 9-0 in the season-opening dual match for both teams at Wangerin Courts.
The Warhawks (1-0 overall, 1-0 WIAC) combined to drop only four games in doubles play and claimed each singles match in two sets.
Senior
Megan Humphreys (Kenosha/Tremper) and junior
Bridgid McGuire (Slinger/Slinger) combined for an 8-1 triumph at No. 1 doubles, and junior
Jillian Wallace (Crystal Lake, IL/Central) and sophomore
Gabi Kitchell (Wausau, Wis./D.C. Everest) earned an 8-2 victory at No. 2. At the third position, juniors
Alicia Beck (Bismarck, ND/St. Mary's Central) and
Alexandra Talyansky (Mequon/Homestead) gave UW-Whitewater a 3-0 lead with an 8-1 win.
Humphreys claimed the decisive fifth point with a 6-0, 6-1 triumph at the top singles slot. McGuire (No. 3), Talyansky (No. 4) and Wallace (No. 5) also made quick work of their opponents to give the Warhawks a 7-0 advantag.e
Beck posted a 6-3, 6-1 victory at No. 6, and Kitchell finished the match with a 6-1, 7-5 win at the second position.
UW-Whitewater continues play Saturday by hosting the eight-team Warhawk Invitational at Wangerin Courts. Play is set to begin at 9 a.m.
