Discus Throwers Headline Day 1 at NCAA Outdoor Championships

The University of Wisconsin-Whitewater men's and women's track and field teams combined for three All-America honors Thursday on the first day of the NCAA Outdoor Track and Field Championships at Wartburg College in Waverly, Iowa.
 
The Warhawk men are tied for sixth with eight points, and the women are eighth with seven points after the first day of competition.
 
Sophomore Theron Baumann (Monona Grove, Wis./Monona Grove) garnered the fourth All-America accolade of his career, finishing as national runner-up in the discus with a personal record distance of 175-03 (53.41 meters), only five inches shy of the championship throw.
 
Sophomore Parker Witt (Appleton, Wis./Appleton North) qualified for the finals in the 200-meter dash with a time of 21.40 seconds, good for fourth place in the preliminaries.
 
The 4x100-meter relay team of Witt, juniors Connor Larson (St. Charles, Ill./St. Charles North), Grant Loess (St. Charles, Ill./St. Charles North) and Zak Loess (St. Charles, Ill./St. Charles North) placed 11th in the preliminaries with a mark of 41.56.
 
On the women's side, juniors Genny Rose Stringer (Assumption, Ill./Assumption) and Amanda Strupp (Slinger, Wis./Slinger) each earned a spot on the All-America podium in the discus, placing fourth and seventh, respectively. Stringer, now a two-time All-American in the event, posted a result of 159-02 (48.52 meters). Strupp collected her second career All-America medal with a 147-09 (45.03 meters), moving up eight spots from her original seeding.
 
Junior Meredith Heller (Hales Corners, Wis./Whitnall) and senior Candice Wayne (West Bend, Wis./West) competed in the preliminaries of the 400-meter hurdles, placing 11th and 16th, respectively. Heller crossed the finish line in 1:01.96, while Wayne, a two-time national qualifier in the event, tallied a time of 1:02.95.
 
Warhawk competition in Waverly is scheduled to resume Friday at 11:30 a.m. with sophomore Cameron MaGee in the high jump. Baumann will participate in the shot put at 3 p.m., senior Mike Judd (Chicago, Ill./St. Laurence) will run the prelims of the 110-meter hurdles at 4:15 p.m. and Witt will compete in the 100-meter dash prelims at 5:15 p.m.
