For the fifth time in school history, the University of Wisconsin-Whitewater women's tennis team has advanced to the third round of the NCAA Division III Tournament on the heels of a 5-0 victory over Hope College Friday at the Wangerin Courts in Whitewater. The 21st-ranked Warhawks improve to 24-5 and tie the school record, set last season, for wins in a year. Hope, who saw their 15-match win streak come to an end, finishes the season 19-5.
Megan Humphreys (Kenosha/Tremper) and
Bridgid McGuire (Slinger/Slinger) got things going for the Warhawks by finishing off their number one doubles match first. The pair, ranked first in the Central Region, defeated 6th-ranked Nancy Benda and Marie Holaway 8-2 to improve to 33-4 this season.
Three doubles partners,
Gabi Kitchell (Wausau, Wis./D.C. Everest) and
Alexandra Talyansky (Mequon/Homestead), improved to 27-2 with an 8-4 victory over the Flying Dutch.
Alicia Beck (Bismarck, ND/St. Mary's Central) and
Jillian Wallace (Crystal Lake, IL/Central) wrapped up the doubles sweep with an 8-4 win at two doubles to improve to 27-2 overall.
In singles play it was Humphreys and Kitchell who put the match away by finishing first and second, respectively. Humphreys, the fourth-ranked player in the Central Region, defeated ninth-ranked Benda 6-2, 6-2 to improve to 27-7.
Kitchell, ranked 8th in the Central Region, clinched the match and improved to a remarkable 41-1 with a 6-1, 6-1 victory over Anna Garcia, the 23rd ranked player in the Central Region.
Since the match is played to decision, the remaining four singles matches were unfinished. The Warhawks were leading in three of the flights at the time of completion.
UW-W will attempt to advance to the final eight tomorrow at 2 pm. They will play the winner of the Gustavus Adolphus/University of Chicago match taking place at 1 pm on Friday.
