Box Score 2 The University of Wisconsin-Whitewater softball team used a walk-off in game one and clutch pitching in game two to earn a doubleheader sweep of UW-Oshkosh Saturday at van Steenderen Complex in Whitewater to remain in the hunt for first place in the Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference. The Warhawks, now 21-10 overall and 7-3 in the WIAC, won game one 3-2 and game two 8-7 to hand the Titans their first two conference losses and drop them to 21-7 overall and 8-2 in the league.
Emily Rux (Chicago, Ill./Mother McAuley) singled in game one's first run in the second.
Hannah Taylor (Glen Ellyn, Ill./Glenbard South) belted a solo homer down the right field line in the third to give the Warhawks a 2-0 lead.
Julia Camardo (Arlington Heights, Ill./Buffalo Grove) was on the mound for UW-W and did not surrender a hit until the fourth inning. The Titans used two hits in the frame to push one across the plate and tighten the score to 2-1.
A solo shot by the Titan first baseman in the top of the seventh tied the game at two and set the stage for a dramatic ending.
Taylor led off the seventh by reaching first after getting hit by a pitch.
Jessica Kaemerer (New Lenox, Ill./Lincoln Way West) came on as a pinch runner.
Mallory Klotz (New Berlin, Wis./West) followed with a single through the right side and Kaemerer moved all the way to third. Head Coach
Brenda Volk followed by putting in
Lauren Janczak (Carol Stream, Ill./Bartlett) to pinch hit for the team's leading hitter,
Caitlin Catino (Arlington Heights, Ill./Buffalo Grove), and the move paid off. Janczak ripped a single over the right fielder's head to end the game.
Errors by the Titans lifted the Warhawks to a 5-0 lead after one inning in game two. The Warhawks scored on three hits and three errors in the frame.
The Titans responded with a three-run homer in the second to make it 5-3.
In the bottom of the third, Taylor gave the Warhawks a 6-3 advantage with a sacrifice fly to center that plated Kaemerer. Kaemerer came around to score again in the fifth on a double by Janczak to increase the Warhawks' lead to 7-3.
Haley Morelli (Mundelein, Ill./Mundelein) singled in
Kayla Seymour (New Lenox, Ill./Lincoln-Way West) in the sixth for an 8-3 lead. Seymour's run would prove to be crucial in the outcome of the game.
The Titans did not go quietly. A leadoff homer in the seventh made it 8-4 and five batters later, a three-run homerun made it 8-7. The next batter doubled to make things even more interesting, but Camardo got the final batter to strike out swinging to end the game and earn her first save of the season.
Camardo came up big in both games. In game one she went the distance, giving up just four hits while striking out ten. In the second game she came on in relief of
Cara Smoczynski (Aurora, Ill./Rosary) in the fifth and got out of a bases loaded, one-out pinch by striking out the final two batters of the inning.
Stephanie Waller (Oak Lawn, Ill./Richards) started game two and earned the victory. She too got out of a pinch in the third. With the bases loaded and only one out, she got the final two batters on a pop up and a strikeout.
The Warhawks will travel to the University of Dubuque in Iowa on Monday for their final regular season non-conference contest.
