The No. 26 University of Wisconsin-Whitewater women's tennis team downed a top 10 opponent and was edged by another nationally ranked team Saturday at the Midwest Invitational at Nielsen Tennis Stadium in Madison, Wis.
The Warhawks (18-3 overall) bested ninth-ranked Washington-St. Louis 5-4 in the semifinals before falling 5-3 against No. 15 Chicago in the tournament final. Both contests were completed upon decision.
UW-Whitewater completed the weekend with wins over two of the top five teams in the region by the Intercollegiate Tennis Association – No. 1 Washington-St. Louis and No. 5 Denison (Ohio).
Sophomore
Alexandra Talyansky (Mequon/Homestead) put the Warhawks on the board against Wash U., recovering from a first-set loss for a 0-6, 6-2, 1-0 (11-9) triumph at No. 4 singles.
Sophomore
Jillian Wallace (Crystal Lake, IL/Central) brought UW-Whitewater to within 3-2 with a 6-3, 6-2 victory at the fifth position. Freshman
Gabi Kitchell (Wausau, Wis./D.C. Everest) improved her team-leading singles record to 32-1 and tied the match at 3-3 after grinding out a 6-2, 5-7, 1-0 (10-3) win at the second slot over Jamie Silverberg, the region's No. 23 ranked singles player.
After the Bears (9-6) took the first doubles point, the Warhawks' No. 1 doubles team of junior
Megan Humphreys (Kenosha/Tremper) and sophomore
Bridgid McGuire (Slinger/Slinger) won the final three games en route to a 9-7 victory over Silverberg and Grace Deering, the region's No. 7 doubles pair.
Kitchell and Talyansky jumped out to a 4-1 lead at the No. 3 position and posted an 8-5 triumph to clinch the match for UW-Whitewater.
Against Chicago (8-3), the Warhawks won two of three doubles matches before dropping four of the first five singles matches.
Wallace and sophomore
Alicia Beck (Bismarck, ND/St. Mary's Central) tallied an 8-6 victory at No. 2 doubles to give UW-Whitewater the first point of the affair. Kitchell and Talyansky gave the team a 2-1 advantage with an 8-4 triumph at the No. 3 slot.
Kitchell posted a 7-6 (4), 6-3 win at the second singles position over the Maroons' Rachel Kim, who is ranked seventh in the region and 20th in the nation in singles by the ITA.
The Warhawks continue play next Sunday, April 10, against Carthage at 9 a.m. and Carroll at 12 p.m. in Kenosha.
