The No. 26 University of Wisconsin-Whitewater women's tennis team scored a win over a nationally ranked opponent Friday morning, knocking off No. 23 Denison (Ohio) 9-0 in a quarterfinal match at the Midwest Invitational at Nielsen Tennis Stadium in Madison.
The Warhawks (17-2 overall) swept all three doubles matches and claimed all six singles spots, including three by a third-set super tiebreaker. They advance to the semifinals, where they'll face the winner of No. 9 Washington-St. Louis and No. 39 Gustavus Adolphus (Minn.) Saturday at 7:30 a.m. at Nielsen.
Denison (7-7) entered the match ranked sixth in the Central Region by the Intercollegiate Tennis Association, while UW-Whitewater was slotted sixth.
Junior
Megan Humphreys (Kenosha/Tremper) and sophomore
Bridgid McGuire (Slinger/Slinger), the region's No. 1 doubles team according to the ITA, defeated the Big Red's Lauren Hawley and Meg Chiumento, the region's No. 2 pair, by an 8-4 tally at the top position.
Sophomores
Alicia Beck (Bismarck, ND/St. Mary's Central) and
Jillian Wallace (Crystal Lake, IL/Central), ranked fifth in the region, posted an 8-6 triumph at No. 2 doubles. Sophomore
Alexandra Talyansky (Mequon/Homestead) and freshman
Gabi Kitchell (Wausau, Wis./D.C. Everest) combined for an 8-3 victory at No. 3.
Humphreys posted a 6-3, 6-3 win over Hawley at No. 1 singles in a matchup of the region's third and fourth ranked players, respectively. Kitchell, slotted eighth in the region, downed Chiumento, the nation's No. 50 ranked singles player, by a 6-1, 6-2 count.
Talyansky also registered a straight set win, defeating Megan Hickey 6-1, 6-4 at the fourth flight.
McGuire (No. 3) and Wallace (No. 5) each recovered from a first-set loss to win a third-set super tiebreaker. At No. 6, Beck won her first set, dropped her second and posted a 14-12 super tiebreaker victory to complete the match sweep.
