La Crosse, Wis. – The University of Wisconsin-Whitewater men's and women's swimming and diving teams competed in their final conference meet of the season on Saturday afternoon at UW-La Crosse.
The men's team defeated the Eagles in a thriller by a score of 122-121. The women's team dropped their match by a score of 115-126.
The Warhawk men's showing was highlighted by two events this afternoon, by sweeping both the 1000-yard freestyle and the 200-yard IM. Junior Joshua Kanute finished first in the 1000-yard freestyle with a time of 10:25.58, followed by junior
Andrew Staszak (Franklin/Greendale) at 10:38.68, and junior
Alex Carroll (Downers Grove, Ill./Downers Grove North) took third with a time of 10:58.87.
In the 200-yard IM freshman
Chandler Lewis (Cedarburg, Wis./Cedarburg) took first with a time of 2:01.36, followed by freshman
Peter Loftus (Janesville, Wis./Craig) who finished with a time of 2:01.50, and Junior Daniel Bielski took third with a time of 2:03.32. Bielski also took second in the 100-yard butterfly with a time of 53.59.
Feshman
Jonathan Jaworski (Waukesha, Wis./South) and
Sam Douglass (Grafton, Wis./Cedarburg) finished second and third in the 50-yard freestyle. Jaworski took second with a time 21.89 and Douglass finished with a time of 21.91 for third. Jaworski also took third in the 100-yard freestyle with a time of 48.73. Douglass took second in the 100-yard backstroke with a time of 53.77.
Senior
Keefer Kuhl (Kenosha/Kenosha Bradford) placed second in the 3-meter dive with a score of 228.20 and third in the 1-meter dive with a score of 234.20.
On the women's side, freshman
Erin Hawker (Chanhassen, Minn./Hutchinson) highlighted the Warhawks with two first place finishes. Hawker won the 200-yard IM with a time of 2:13.81, teammate
Sarah Arteaga (Greenfield/Whitnall) took second in the event with a time of 2:15.20. Hawker also won the 100-yard breaststroke with a time of 1:09.18.
Sophomore
Michaela Matthys (Crystal Lake, Ill./McHenry West) broke the UW-La Crosse pool record in the 100-yard butterfly with a time of 57.39. Matthys also placed second in the 50-yard freestyle with a time of 25.14.
Juniors
Margaret Lotzer (Arlington Heights, Ill./Buffalo Grove) and
Grace Devine (Sussex/Hamilton) finished second and third in the 200-yard freestyle. They finished a second a part, Lotzer with a time of 2:00.19 and Devine a second later at 2:01.11. They also finished first and second in the 500-yard freestyle. Lotzer took first with a time of 5:19.42, and Devine finished with a time of 5:30.19.
Senior
Sierra Becker (River Falls, Wis./River Falls) placed first in the 1-meter dive with a score of 258.35. Becker also finished fourth in the 3-meter dive with a total score of 207.35.
UW-Whitewater will return to action February 18-20, when the teams will compete at the WIAC Championships in Brown Deer, Wis.
