The University of Wisconsin-Whitewater men's and women's swimming and diving teams wrapped up the first day of competition at the Wheaton College Invitational Friday evening. The Warhawk men hold fourth, while the women sit in third place overall.
The men have a team score of 288.5, while the women combined to score a 332 after the first day.
Senior
Dan Bielski (Chanhassen, Minn./Minnetonka) highlighted the Warhawk men's showing, finishing second in the 200-yard backstroke with a time of 1:52.23. Sophomores
Peter Loftus (Janesville, Wis./Craig) and
Thomas Stigler (Milwaukee, Wis./Muskego) took fifth in each of their respective events. Loftus finished the 200-yard individual medley in a time of 1:58.80, while Stigler finished the 100-yard breaststroke with a time of 1:08.18. Freshman
Drew Borland (Muskego, Wis./Muskego) took seventh in the 500-yard freestyle finishing with a time of 4:44.47.
Loftus also broke the school record in the 100-yard individual medley with a time of 53.77, overtaking Bielski's time in 2015 for the top mark in the program record book.
Seniors Samuel Bowman and
Josh Kanute (Geneva, Ill./Marmion Academy) teamed up with junior
Steven Missak (Naperville, Ill./Naperville North) and sophomore
Chandler Lewis (Cedarburg, Wis./Cedarburg) to take third in the 800-yard freestyle relay.
On the women's side, senior
Margaret Lotzer (Arlington Heights, Ill./Buffalo Grove) highlighted the Warhawks with a second-place finish in the 500-yard freestyle with a time of 5:12.45. Lotzer also teamed up with seniors
Grace Devine (Sussex/Hamilton) and
Sarah Arteaga (Greenfield/Whitnall) and sophomore
Erin Hawker (Chanhassen, Minn./Hutchinson) to place third in the 800-yard freestyle relay with a time of 7:57.68.
Arteaga also placed sixth in the 200-yard backstroke with a time of 2:12.81. Junior
Michaela Matthys (Crystal Lake, Ill./McHenry West) took second in the 100-yard breaststroke with a time of 1:05.57, while teammate
Melanie Carlson (Waukesha, Wis./West) took seventh in the 200-yard butterfly with a time of 2:16.39.
UW-Whitewater returns to action tomorrow morning for the second day of the Wheaton Invitational. The meet is set to start at 10 a.m. followed by the finals in the afternoon.
