The University of Wisconsin-Whitewater women's tennis team fared well against competition from six scholarship schools Friday on the first day of the seven-team Warhawk Fall Invitational at Wangerin Courts.
Senior
Megan Humphreys (Kenosha/Tremper) and sophomore
Gabi Kitchell (Wausau, Wis./D.C. Everest) claimed the title at No. 1 doubles. After consecutive 8-4 wins over UW-Milwaukee and Grand Valley State, Humphreys and Kitchell bested another UW-Milwaukee duo in a tiebreaker for an 8-7 (5) triumph.
In the No. 2 draw, juniors
Brittany Goebel (McHenry, IL/West) and
Alexandra Talyansky (Mequon/Homestead) won twice to reach the final, where they were bested by Olivet Nazarene. Juniors
Alicia Beck (Bismarck, ND/St. Mary's Central) and
Jillian Wallace (Crystal Lake, IL/Central) placed seventh.
Senior
Rachel Siemon (Crystal Lake, IL/South) and junior
Kassie Alexander (Waukesha/South) placed fourth at No. 3. After reaching the semifinal, the duo was edged by UW-Milwaukee before falling against Western Illinois in the third-place match. Junior
Gabriella Gregorio (Roselle, IL/Bartlett) and freshman
Madeline Slicker (Mequon, Wis./Homestead) reached the consolation final in the same draw, but were bested by Olivet Nazarene.
The first round of singles was also played Friday. Kitchell (No. 1 draw), Talyansky (No. 2), junior
Jillian Wallace (Crystal Lake, IL/Central) (No. 3), Alexander (No. 5) and Gregorio (No. 6) were all winners in the quarterfinals of their respective draw.
Singles play continues Saturday starting at 9 a.m. at Wangerin Courts.
