Megan Humphreys (Kenosha/Tremper) of the University of Wisconsin-Whitewater women's tennis team finished as national runner-up Saturday at the Intercollegiate Tennis Association Oracle Cup in Surprise, Ariz.
The Warhawks (10-1 overall, 6-0 Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference) also won a pair of conference matches back in Wisconsin. The team traveled to the western part of the state and bested UW-Stout 8-1 and UW-River Falls by a 9-0 score to finish the fall season with an unblemished record in league play and extend its winning streak against WIAC opponents to 78.
After knocking off the Nos. 4 and 1 seeds en route to the final of the Division III singles draw, Humphreys was defeated 6-3, 6-1 against second-seeded Bridget Harding of Emory (Ga.) in the championship match.
The runner-up finish was the second of Humphreys' career at the national tournament and her fourth top-five placement.
Against UW-Stout (5-7, 2-4), UW-Whitewater claimed all three doubles matches to take a 3-0 lead. Juniors
Alicia Beck (Bismarck, ND/St. Mary's Central) and
Jillian Wallace (Crystal Lake, IL/Central) claimed an 8-0 victory at No. 1, and juniors
Brittany Goebel (McHenry, IL/West) and
Alexandra Talyansky (Mequon/Homestead) picked up an 8-1 triumph at No. 2. Senior
Rachel Siemon (Crystal Lake, IL/South) and freshman
Madeline Slicker (Mequon, Wis./Homestead) combined at the third position for an 8-5 win.
Wallace didn't allow a game at No. 2 singles, posting a 6-0, 6-0 victory. Goebel posted a 6-2, 6-1 triumph at No. 4, and Talyansky and Beck won by identical scores of 6-2, 6-2 at Nos. 1 and 3, respectively.
Slicker closed out the Warhawks' scoring with a 6-0, 6-4 victory at No. 6.
In the match against UW-River Falls (0-7, 0-6), UW-Whitewater didn't surrender a game in doubles and swept all six singles slots.

Kassie Alexander (Waukesha/South) and
Gabriella Gregorio (Roselle, IL/Bartlett) filled in the lineup for Siemon and Slicker, and each finished with wins in both singles and doubles.
The Warhawks return to play next Saturday and Sunday, Oct. 22-23, at the WIAC Championship. Play begins at 1 p.m. Saturday and 9 a.m. Sunday at Nielsen Tennis Stadium in Madison.
