Related Links:Carthage Box ScoreCarroll Box Score WHITEWATER – The No. 28 University of Wisconsin-Whitewater women's tennis team reached the 20-win plateau for the eighth consecutive season Saturday with back-to-back victories over Carthage and Carroll at Wangerin Courts.
The Warhawks (20-4), ranked seventh in the Central Region by the Intercollegiate Tennis Association, defeated the region's No. 13, Carthage, by a 7-2 count before knocking off Carroll by an 8-1 score.
In the match against Carroll (12-11), UW-Whitewater dropped just one game in doubles en route to a three-point lead. Freshmen
Alexandra Talyansky (Mequon/Homestead) and
Alicia Beck (Bismarck, ND/St. Mary's Central) tallied an 8-1 triumph at the No. 1 position. Junior captain
Ashley Miller (Racine/Union Grove) and freshman
Jillian Wallace (Crystal Lake, IL/Central) were 8-0 winners at No. 2, and sophomore
Rachel Siemon (Crystal Lake, IL/South) and freshman
Brittany Goebel (McHenry, IL/West) teamed up for an 8-0 victory at No. 3.
Freshman
Kassie Alexander (Waukesha/South) gave the Warhawks a 4-0 lead with a 6-2, 6-1 triumph at No. 6 singles. Goebel and senior captain
Emily Sodemann (Janesville/Parker) were next to finish. Sodemann was impressive at the fourth position, recording a 6-0, 6-0 shutout, while Goebel was a 6-3, 6-0 winner at No. 5.
Beck (6-4, 7-6 (5)) and Siemon (6-3, 6-1) were also victorious in straight sets at Nos. 2 and 3, respectively.
Against Carthage (19-2), the Warhawks captured all three doubles matches to take a 3-0 lead. Beck and Wallace picked up an 8-2 victory at the second spot, while and Siemon won at No. 3 by an identical score.
Talyansky and freshman
Bridgid McGuire (Slinger/Slinger) registered an 8-6 triumph over Haleigh McPeek and Max Mella, the region's No. 9 ranked doubles pair, at the No. 1 doubles position to complete the sweep.
Talyansky, Wallace and Siemon doubled the UW-Whitewater lead, taking the first three completed matches in singles play. Talyansky was a 6-1, 6-2 winner at No. 2, while Wallace earned a 6-3, 6-3 victory at No. 3. Siemon recorded a 6-1, 6-2 triumph at the fifth position.
Beck accounted for the final margin with a 6-3, 6-4 win at No. 4.
The Warhawks host the Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference Final Four AQ Tournament next Saturday at Wangerin Courts. UW-Whitewater, the tournament's top seed, takes on fourth-seeded UW-Oshkosh in the semifinals at noon.
Following the semifinal match, senior
Amanda Dick (Kenosha/St. Joseph Catholic Academy) will be recognized on Senior Day for her accomplishments with the program.
