Women's Soccer Seeks WIAC Tournament Crown

After finishing the regular season 14-4 overall and 5-2 in the Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference, the University of Wisconsin-Whitewater women's soccer team enters the 2015 WIAC tournament as the three seed.

The tournament begins on Tuesday and the Warhawks will play host to sixth-seeded UW-Stout at 6 pm at Fiskum Field. These two teams met in Menomonie nine days ago and the Warhawks came away with a 4-1 victory. Including this season's win, UW-Whitewater holds a 16-6-1 record all-time against Stout, including winning the last four in a row. The last time these two met in the WIAC tournament was in 2007 when the Warhawks topped the Blue Devils at home 3-0.

The winner of Tuesday night's quarterfinal matches will advance to play either UW-Oshkosh or UW-La Crosse on Thursday. Playing in Tuesday's other quarterfinal match is fifth-seeded UW-River Falls and fourth-seeded UW-Eau Claire. The lowest remaining seed will travel to play the Titans, while the highest remaining seed will go to La Crosse. Both semifinal matches are slated to begin at 6 pm.

The two remaining teams will play for the WIAC Tournament title and an automatic bid into the NCAA Division III Tournament on Saturday at the site of the highest remaining seed. The time is to be determined based on location.

This season the Warhawks are led by Brianna Reid (Oak Creek, Wis./Oak Creek) who has scored 17 goals in 18 matches, seven more than any other player in the WIAC. Reid also leads the league in points, adding three assists to her 17 goals for a total of 37 points. Nine of Reid's goals have gone down as game-winners, tying her for the most in the country.

Carly Pottle (St. Charles, Ill./St. Charles East) and Karina Rosales (Batavia, Ill./Batavia) are also among the top ten in the conference for goals scored. Pottle is tied for second with 10 goals and Rosales is tied for sixth with seven goals.

As a team the Warhawks lead the league in points, goals and assists and rank third in shots, and fourth in goals allowed. Their first opponent, UW-Stout, ranks sixth in the league in points and goals and does not have a player in the top ten of goals scored.

The Warhawks are posting remarkable offensive numbers so far this season. They are currently third in the UW-W record books for goals scored in a season, and second in assists and points. Fifteen different players have recorded a goal and eleven of those players have tallied at least one goal and one assist.

Half of the Warhawks' wins this season have come by way of the shutout. Freshman goalkeeper Erin Doody (New Lenox, Ill./Lincoln Way Central) has recorded four of those on her own while Elly Diderrich (Mukwonago, Wis./Mukwonago) contributed some time in the three others.

This is the first time since 2010 that the Warhawks have not been the number one seed entering the tournament. The Warhawks have won the WIAC tournament title twice; 2012 and 2013. UW-Oshkosh won the tournament title last season as the number two seed. The three seed has only won the tournament one time, and that was in 1996 when UW-La Crosse won their only tournament title.
