The University of Wisconsin-Whitewater women's tennis team began play Friday at the three-day United States Tennis Association/Intercollegiate Tennis Association Division III Midwest Regional Championships at Gustavus Adolphus College in St. Peter, Minn.
 
Sophomore Megan Humphreys (Kenosha/Tremper) and freshman Bridgid McGuire (Slinger/Slinger) highlighted the Warhawks' first day at the tournament in singles play.
 
Humphreys, the defending regional champion in singles, defeated Grinnell (Iowa) and St. Thomas (Minn.) in straight sets to advance to the Round of 16, where she'll face ninth-seeded Claire Spencer of Carleton.
 
McGuire downed Luther (Iowa) and knocked off No. 19 seed Kylie Ketcho of St. Catherine's (Minn.) and will face No. 5 Shirlene Luk of Grinnell tomorrow in the Round of 16.
 
Senior Amanda Dick (Kenosha/St. Joseph Catholic Academy), freshmen Alicia Beck (Bismarck, ND/St. Mary's Central) and Alexandra Talyansky (Mequon/Homestead) each won one match before falling in the next round.
 
In doubles play, Humphreys and sophomore Amy Upthagrove (Muskego/Muskego), as well as Beck and McGuire, advanced to the Round of 16.
 
Play continues in both singles and doubles tomorrow.
