#21 Warhawks Fall to #4 Emory in Atlanta

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 ATLANTA, Ga - The UW-Whitewater volleyball team fell to 8-3 with a loss to fourth ranked Emory University Friday evening at Woodruff PE Center on Emory's campus. The match lived up to the hype as one of the premier Division III matches of the week as the Eagles won 3-1 (25-23, 28-30, 30-28, 25-22).

The Warhawks took an early 13-8 lead in the first set but Emory battled back with a 12-4 run to take the lead, 20-17. The Eagles extended the advantage to 24-21 but UW-Whitewater forced four set points before Emory's Leah Jacobs registered a kill to give EU a 25-23 win to open the match.

The second set saw the score tied 18 times in a true teeter-totter battle. With the score knotted at 27, junior right side Brittney Langley (Winnebago, IL/Winnebago) hammered the ball down for a kill to give the Warhawks a 28-27 lead. Emory tied it up for the 18th time in the set but Langley sealed the deal. She pounded down the next set from senior setter Kim Frei (West Bend/West Bend West) and went back to the service line with a 29-28 lead. Langley's float serve towards the center of the court went off the right arm of an Eagle defender for the ace to give UW-Whitewater the 30-28 win and even the match 1-1.

Set three progressed in similar fashion with the teams trading points and once again the score went passed the usual 25. With the scoreboard showing 28-28, it was Emory that put together two points in a row for the 30-28 win.

The Eagles jumped out to a 6-1 lead in the fourth set of the match but the Warhawks weren't finished. UW-Whitewater battled back to tie the score 17-17 but the Eagles used a 6-3 run to regain the advantage 23-20. Sophomore outside hitter Lauren Pfeifer (Fort Atkinson/Fort Atkinson) pounded a ball down the line for the kill and an Eagle miscue made it 23-22 in favor of Emory but the Eagles scored back-to-back points for the win, 25-22.

Four Warhawks hit in double figures led by Langley and junior outside hitter Jessica Sabey (Merrill/Merrill) with 17 a piece, both career highs. Interestingly, the two hitters' previous career bests also came in the same match when Sabey posted 16 and Langley 15 kills in UW-Whitewater's 3-2 win over Elmhurst September 8, 2012.

Nobilio notched 33 digs in the contest, her season high. Pfeifer posted a double-double with 13 kills and 17 digs in the match. Frei dished out 54 of the team's 57 assists and added 12 digs.

The Warhawks will face Bowdoin Saturday at 12 p.m. Eastern time. UW-Whitewater will warp up play in the Emory Invite against Birmingham-Southern at 4:30 p.m. Eastern.
