Box Score 2 A nine-run seventh inning in game one, and a six-run seventh in game two propelled the Warhawks to a doubleheader sweep of UW-Platteville Saturday in Platteville. The Warhawks came from behind to win game one 11-5 and went on to win game two 13-4 to improve to 19-4 overall and 6-2 in the Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference. The Pioneers fall to 13-19 overall and 2-6 in league play.
After UW-W fell behind 5-2 after six innings it looked as though the Pioneers were going to win game one of the doubleheader. Pioneer starter Jess Butzen had given up just nine hits and two runs all game. But a serious Warhawk rally was about to take place ... one that included nine hits and nine runs. UW-W registered five hits and four runs before the Pioneers could record an out. They followed with three more hits and three more runs, with a little help from an error, before UW-P could notch out number two. At this point UW-W led 8-5, but that wasn't the end of the rally. The Warhawks nabbed two more runs on a
Morgan Krisch (Plainfield, IL/Central) single to go up 11-5, and finally, two batters later, the inning ended. UW-W totaled fourteen at bats in the inning.
Stephanie Waller (Oak Lawn, IL/Richards), who came on in relief of
Kelynn Sporer (Chilton/Chilton) earlier in the game, loaded the bases in the bottom of the seventh but got out of the jam by getting the final two batters out with a strikeout and a line out.
Game two didn't feature the same heroic comeback as game one, but UW-W again added runs late to go on to win big.
The Warhawks sped out to a 6-0 lead after three.
Amy Ricci (Gurnee, IL/Warren Township) and
Alyssa Fernandez (Carol Stream, IL/St. Francis) each belted a homer in the third. The Pioneers tallied a run in the fourth but the Warhawks got it back in the fifth on another long ball, this time by
Jo Jablonski (Palatine, IL/Palatine).
Pioneer first baseman Haley Salazar hit a three-run homer in the fifth to bring UW-P within three at 7-4, but the Warhawk offense went to work again in the seventh scoring six more runs to take a 13-4 lead. This time UW-W used five doubles to do most of the damage. They totaled six runs on seven hits in the inning.
Bekka Houda (Lisle, IL/Lisle) earned the win to improve to 9-2 this season pitching four and two-thirds before giving way to Waller. Waller gave up just two hits the rest of the way.
The Warhawks combined for 36 hits in the doubleheader, 18 each game. Jablonski was a perfect 7-for-7 from the plate and added four runs and three RBIs. She was followed by Krisch who was 6-for-8 with two runs and five RBIs, and
Mimi Ramirez (Chicago, IL/Trinity) who went 5-for-10 with four runs and three RBIs. Thirteen different Warhawks recorded at least one hit in the doubleheader.
The Warhawks will travel to the University of Chicago tomorrow for a doubleheader beginning at 1 pm.
