Warhawks Take Two in Clermont

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 CLERMONT, Fla. - Junior righthander Bekka Houda (Lisle, IL/Lisle) picked up two wins on the mound for UW-W as the Warhawks topped Carthage 4-2 and came back to defeat Wellesley 10-5 Wednesday. Whitewater is 8-2 heading into the final day of competition in the National Training Center Spring Games.

Carthage opened the scoring in the first game using two singles to go ahead 1-0 after 1.5 innings. The Warhawks came back in their half of the inning to take the lead. Morgan Krisch (Plainfield, IL/Central) led off the inning with a double to right center. Samie Seamon (Antioch, IL/Antioch) sacrificed but an error put runners on the corners. Seamon stole second and Kelly McGrail (Tinley Park, IL/V.J. Andrew) took advantage with a single down the right field line to bring in both runs. 

UW-W added insurance runs in the bottom of the third and bottom of the fifth while the defense held the Lady Reds to just three hits and one run the final five innings to notch the 4-2 win.

Amy Ricci (Gurnee, IL/Warren Township) and Mimi Ramirez (Chicago, IL/Trinity) each went 2-3 in the batter's box with Ricci tallying two RBI and Ramirez two runs scored. Houda struck out four and walked one in six innings of work to improve to 3-2. Kelynn Sporer (Chilton/Chilton) came in for the final inning to record her first save of the season.

Trailing 3-0 heading into the fifth inning of game two, the Warhawks slowly got the offense going. Alyssa Fernandez (Carol Stream, IL/St. Francis) opened the top of the fifth with a walk, moved to second on Ramirez' sacrifice bunt and scored on a Laura Eichenold (Elmwood Park, IL/Trinity) single up the middle to narrow the gap to 3-1.

Whitewater took the lead, 4-3, with three runs in the top of the sixth off of three hits and two Wellesley errors. Fernandez drove in two runs with a single up the middle and Ricci drew a bases loaded walk for the third run of the inning.

WC went back in front with a two-run bottom of the sixth, both coming in after two outs. 

Jo Jablonski (Palatine, IL/Palatine) opened the seventh with a walk and was replaced on the base path by Courtney Smith (St. Charles, IL/North). Maggie Hansen (Algonquin, IL/Jacobs) followed with a single and Paige Evangelista (Wheaton, IL/North) reached on an error to load the bases. Caitlin Snyder (Burlington/Catholic Central) made good on her pinch hit appearance with a single through the left side to score Smith. Morgan Parise (Sheboygan/North) took over on first for Snyder as Wellesley made a pitching change. Fernandez drew a bases loaded walk to tally the RBI. In the next at bat, Ramirez singled up the middle to score one and a throwing error allowed another Warhawk to cross the plate. With two outs and Ramirez standing on third, Krisch singled through the right side to end the scoring. UW-W added six runs on four hits and capitalized on three errors in the inning to take a 10-5 lead.

Wellesley singled to lead of the bottom of the inning but the Warhawks shut the door retiring the next three batters for the win.

Evangelista led UW-W at the plate with a 3-4 performance. Ramirez and Krisch each posted two hits and Fernandez added three RBI and three runs scored offensively.

Houda picked up her second win of the day in 3.2 innings on the mound. The righty struck out three and walked two to improve to 4-2 this season.

The Warhawks wrap up their spring trip with games against Williams and Union at 11:00 and 1:00 respectively.
