Related Links:Results The University of Wisconsin-Whitewater men's swimming and diving team won 11 of 13 events Saturday to begin the 2014-15 season with a 176-61 triumph over Luther in a non-conference dual meet at Decorah, Iowa.
Junior
Keefer Kuhl (Kenosha/Kenosha Bradford) and sophomore
Alex Gidlow (Aurora, Ill./Metea Valley) won two individual events apiece to lead the Warhawks.
Kuhl took first place in both the 1- and 3-meter diving events. He totaled a score of 260.86 in the 1-meter, and compiled a 239.55 in the 3-meter.
Gidlow was victorious in the 50- and 100-yard freestyles. In the 50, Gidlow out-touched freshman teammate
Sam Piette (Germantown/Germantown) by just under a half second with a time of 22.49. He took the 100 in a time of 49.40 to best senior teammate
Ryan Stuart (Frankfort, Ill./Lincolnway East) by three tenths of a second.
Senior
Jake Shackelford (Wauwatosa/Wauwatosa East) was a winner in the 1000-yard freestyle with a time of 10:28.10, while sophomore
Dan Bielski (Chanhassen, Minn./Minnetonka) took first in the 100-yard butterfly with a mark of 55.28.
Senior
Joe Devroy (Kenosha/Kenosha Bradford), sophomores
Josh Kanute (Geneva, Ill./Marmion Academy) and
Spencer Twining (Janesville/Janesville Parker) were also victorious in their respective events. Devroy won the 100-yard backstroke in 56.92, Kanute took the 500-yard freestyle with a time of 5:01.64 and Twining placed first in the 100-yard breaststroke with a 1:01.70.
UW-Whitewater's two relays were also victorious. Bielski, Twining, senior
Tony Heilberger (Sheboygan/Sheboygan South) and sophomore
Paul Hill (Jefferson/Fort Atkinson) combined to take the 200-yard medley relay with a mark of 1:40.56.
In the 200-yard freestyle relay, Kanute, Hill, sophomores
Sam Bowman (Onalaska/Onalaska) and
James Rodney (Barrington, Ill./Barrington) beat out Piette, Devroy, Stuart and Gidlow by just two-hundredths of a second, 1:30.58 to 1:30.60.
Other top finishers for the Warhawks included Bowman, who placed second in the 200-yard freestyle with a 1:50.43, and Bielski, who was runner-up in the 200-yard individual medley in a time of 2:03.12.
