Warhawks Remain Unbeaten, Now 10-0

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 The nineteenth ranked Warhawk softball team remained unbeaten, 10-0, this season with two short inning, shutout wins in Clermont, Florida Wednesday. UW-W opened with a 9-0, six inning, win over Middlebury and topped St. Olaf 8-0 in five innings in the nightcap. Whitewater posted 29 hits in 10 innings at the plate in the two games Wednesday. (The Warhawks were the home team against St. Olaf and did not bat in the bottom of the fifth due to the run rule.)

Amanda Mertes (Des Plaines, IL/Elk Grove) scored the winning runs in both games in the first inning. Against Middlebury, Mertes led off with a single, stole second and moved to third on a single from Mimi Ramirez (Chicago, IL/Trinity). Mertes scored on a groundout in the next at bat giving UW-W the only run it would need.

The Warhawks scored two in the first, added four more in the second, one in the fourth and two more in the sixth to total nine runs in the game. Five Warhawk hitters posted multiple hits in the contest led by Sarah Fisher (Greenfield/Greenfield) and Mertes' 2x2 games. Morgan Krisch (Plainfield, IL/Central) went 2x4 from plate with four RBI's after bringing three runs in on a two-out double in the second inning. Samie Seamon (Antioch, IL/Antioch) was 3x4 in the batter's box, Laura Eichenold (Elmwood Park, IL/Trinity) added a 2x3 performance and Ramirez was a perfect one for one.

Senior righty Katie Boyle (Greendale/Thomas More) picked up the complete game win allowing six hits in six innings pitched while striking out three.

The second game began exactly the same as the first. Mertes led off with a single, stole second and moved to third on a bunt single off the bat of Ramirez. Ramirez stole second to put two runners in scoring position for UW-W. Mertes beat out the throw home on a fielder's choice from the third baseman to put Whitewater on the board in the top of the first.

The first inning would see another Warhawk runner cross the plate while four more runs were added in the second, bolstered by a Krisch homer over the center field fence that scored two, and the final two runs were plated in the third.

Mertes was 3x3 with three runs scored in the game to lead the Warhawks. Ramirez and Krisch each went 2x3 with five combined RBIs.

The first three batters for the Warhawks, Mertes, Ramirez and Krisch teamed up to go 12x16 from the plate, score 10 runs and record 10 RBIs in the twinbill Wednesday.

Righthander Bekka Houda (Lisle, IL/Lisle) improved to 5-0 this season allowing three hits in four innings pitched while striking out eight and walking two. Freshman Kayla Bastar (Weyauwega/Weyauwega-Freemont) took the mound in the fifth and registered two strikeouts.

UW-Whitewater will wrap up play in the National Training Center Spring Games in Clermont with a doubleheader Thursday against Union College and Whitworth at 9:00 and 11:00 EST respectively.
