Box Score DE PERE, Wis. -- The Warhawk women's basketball team scored the second most points in program history in a 107-61 win over St. Mary's College in the St. Norbert College Tipoff Tournament Friday night. UW-W's total is just one point shy of the program record, 108, that was recorded against UW-Superior December 9, 1989. UW-W will advance to the championship game of the tipoff tournament against the winner of St. Norbert and Northland College. The championship game is scheduled for 3:00 Saturday afternoon.
UW-Whitewater opened the game on an 11-0 in just the first two minutes of play. The lead would hit 30, 52-22 after
Morgan Dahlke (Portage/Portage)'s two free throws, as the teams went into the locker rooms at halftime. The UW-W defense held St. Mary's scoreless for the final 2:41 of the first 20 minutes.
The Warhawks continued to roll in the second half, leading by as much as 47 at the 6:09 mark after
Clare Gloede (Madison/La Follette) hit a three to make it 95-48. The teams traded small runs before UW-W ended the game on a 7-2 spurt bringing the final margin to 107-61.
UW-W shot 48.7% (38-78) including 10 three-pointers, the most in a game since November 18 last season against Monmouth. The Warhawk defense held SMC to 41.5% (27-65) from the field and just 1-4 beyond the arc. Whitewater grabbed 53 rebounds in the game, the most since December 30, 2011 against East Texas Baptist. Defensively, UW-W forced 32 turnovers that translated into 46 points for Whitewater. Fourteen Warhawks contributed to the scoring for UW-Whitewater with 35 points coming off the bench.
Kaitlyn Thill (Belgium/Ozaukee) led all scorers with 24 points and added eight assists, five steals and six boards.
Mary Merg (Greendale/Greendale) posted 16 points on 6-8 shooting from the field adding four steals in the game.
Amy Mandrell (Forsyth, IL/Maroa-Forsyth) added 15 points and grabbed seven rebounds and teammate
Abbie Reeves (Salem/Westosha Central) rounded out the double digit scorers for UW-Whitewater with 10.
The Warhawks are 1-0 and SMC opens the 2013-14 season 0-1.
