Box Score 4 Saturday Recap
UW-W split their final two matches at the UW-Whitewater Invitational Saturday defeating St. Catherine's 3-0 (25-12, 25-10, 25-15) and losing to DePauw 3-0 (25-20, 26-24, 25-23). The Warhawks finished 2-2 at the invite and are now 20-7 while St. Kate's falls to 7-14 and the Tigers improve to 18-3.
Ariel Feiertag (Brown Deer/Brown Deer) led the Warhawks against St. Kate's with eleven kills and a .526 hitting percentage.Â
Kelsey Nobilio (Johnsburg, IL/Johnsburg) did what she does best and notched twenty digs in the match. The Warhawks held the Wildcats to less than ten kills in each set and countered in each with 13 or more of their own. The Warhawk defense disrupted the Wildcat attack and held them to a .032 hitting percentage for the match.
Against DePauw
Kristen Ruchti (Brodhead/Brodhead) pounded down thirteen kills while Feiertag chipped in ten. Nobilio added another 13 digs and moved into fourth place in the Warhawk record books for career digs and matches with double-digit dig totals. It wasn't enough however as the Tigers squeaked out a win in each set.
The Warhawks return to the court on Wednesday, October 16 when they travel to UW-Oshkosh for a match beginning at 7 pm.
Friday Recap
A memorable night set in honor of former Warhawk Lisa Panici capped a 1-1 showing in the first day of the UW-Whitewater Invitational Friday. The Warhawks opened the invite with a 3-0 (25-16, 25-18, 25-8) sweep of Westminster. UW-W, ranked eighteenth in the latest American Volleyball Coaches Association poll, fell a hard fought battle with #11 Washington University-St. Louis 3-2 (25-0-25, 25-18, 25-20, 24-26, 16-4) Friday evening.

After an emotional dedication ceremony recognizing the new Lisa Panici Locker Room, the Warhawks and Bears took to the court. The gym fell silent for the first two points UW-W scored in honor of Lisa (she wore number 12 for Whitewater) but as the third tally was posted to the scoreboard under 'Warhawks' the Kris Russell Volleyball Arena erupted into cheers and celebration not only for Lisa but for the match at hand. Backed by a roaring crowd, the Warhawks took the early lead in the match with a 25-20 first set win.
The Bears turned the tables in the next two sets hitting over .300 in each set while Whitewater struggled to find their rhythm. Regaining some of the confidence from the first set, the Warhawks stayed with WashU in the fourth set. With the score tied 20-20, UW-W rattled off three straight after a
Lauren Pfeifer (Fort Atkinson/Fort Atkinson) kill and back-to-back kills from
Ariel Feiertag (Brown Deer/Brown Deer). Washington-St. Louis did not give in to the pressure of the roaring crowd scoring four out of the next five points out of a timeout knotting the score 24-24. UW-W scored the next two points to force the decisive fifth set.
The Warhawks took an 8-5 lead into the side change forcing a Bears timeout. UW-W scored the first point out of the timeout on a service ace from
Kim Frei (West Bend/West Bend West) but Washington-St. Louis ran off the next eight points to take a 14-9 lead. Facing match point, the UW-W crowd breathed new life into the Warhawks chanting, "We love Lisa". Back-to-back blocks by the team of
Mackenzie Jordan (West Bend/West Bend East) and Feiertag at the net emboldened the fans as the chant for Lisa grew louder. Pfeifer and Feiertag pounded down the next three kills to tie the set at 14 but it was the Bears who came out on top in the end.
Three Warhawks hit double figures in the kill category with
Kristen Ruchti (Brodhead/Brodhead) and Pfeifer posting 14 apiece. Feiertag added 11 and three assist blocks. Defensively,
Kelsey Nobilio (Johnsburg, IL/Johnsburg) led all players with 27 digs. WashU's Caroline Dupont recorded a match high 16 kills and Jackie Nelligan posted 11 total blocks, five solo and six assisted, in the match.
In the first match of the day, UW-W swept Westminster with Ruchti leading the way hitting .389 with 10 kills and nine blocks including three solo. Nobilio notched 13 digs to lead all players defensively.
The Warhawks are 19-6 this season.
