Box Score The UW-Whitewater women's soccer team dropped its season opener 2-0 to Concordia-Moorhead at the Advantage Emblem Cup hosted by the College of Saint Scholastica in Duluth, Minnesota Friday.
Whitewater started fast, with
Natalie Lechner (Waukesha/Catholic Memorial) putting a shot on CM goalie Ali Nelson just 0:22 into the game from the top of the box, and Jessica Armstrong tested Nelson again at 1:10 from the far left wing. Nelson made the saves.
Concordia's first shot on goal broke the ice, with Sarah Rounds booting it home from the top of the box at 11:28.
At the 17:16 mark CM's Gina Weiss knocked the ball off the post, and UW-W keeper
Jordan Myers (Aurora, IL/Waubonsie Valley) stopped another shot by Rounds to keep Whitewater within one, and that was the score at the half.
Rounds came knocking on the door again in the second half, with a shot at 60:25 and another at 60:43, both close in on the right wing, but Myers came up with the save both times. CM added its second goal at 69:24, with Rochelle Hickerson shooting from a left angle, assisted by Rounds.
Whitewater's
Kaitlyn Fritsch (Cottage Grove, Wis./Monona Grove) made a bid to score with a shot from the right wing at 76:00, and
Kelsey Beld (Madison, Wis./Madison Memorial) got one off in the box at 80:55, but Nelson saved both to keep UW-W off the board. Myers returned the favor with another save, this one coming at 83:82.
Concordia out-shot Whitewater in both halves, 4-3 and 7-3. CM also had the advantage in corner kicks, 6-3, and they had the only two offsides of the contest.
UW-W will play Macalester College at 3:00 Saturday in the Advantage Emblem Cup in Duluth. Whitewater's first home match of the season will be September 9 at 2:30, with the University of Dubuque visiting Fiskum Field. Fiskum Field is west of Perkins Stadium and northwest of Williams Center/Kachel Fieldhouse on the north end of campus.
