The UW-Whitewater women's track and field team finished fifth in the Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference Outdoor Championship at Foster Track in Whitewater, Wisconsin. Warhawk junior

UW-La Crosse won the crown with 185 points, followed by UW-Oshkosh 176, UW-Eau Claire 129.5, UW-River Falls 92, UW-Whitewater 86.5, UW-Stout 65, UW-Stevens Point 58, UW-Platteville 55, and UW-Superior 11.
Demos' winning height was 5-6. The high jump title was her sixth, with wins previously in the 2010, 2011 and 2012 WIAC indoor meet, and 2010 and 2011 outdoors.
In addition to her high jump points, Demos also finished second in the 100 hurdles in 14.77. She set the school record of 14.77 in Friday's preliminaries, and equaled that mark again in Saturday's final.
Shelby Mahr (Boyd/Stanley-Boyd) also earned points in two events Saturday, placing third in the discus (135-11) and seventh in the shot put (41-11.5). Mahr had company in the discus ring, with UW-W's
Jill Hernke (Palmyra/Kettle Moraine) fourth (135-1) and
Jenny Winkler (St. Cloud/New Holstein) seventh (129-11).
Demos' first place in the high jump was joined by two UW-W teammates, making the event the most productive in the meet for Whitewater.
Lauren Strohmaier (Genoa, IL/Kingston) finished fifth at 5-3 and
JoLyn Owen (Middleton/Middleton) was eighth at 5-1. UW-W also had three.
UW-W also picked up points from two runners in the 400 meters, with
Beth Dreikosen (Sheboygan/North) sixth (59.15) and Sinone Koene close behind in seventh (59.90).
Other Warhawk place winners included
Amanda Brom (Jefferson/Jefferson), fourth in the 800 (2:16.58);
Lexie Sondgeroth (Rochelle, IL/Township), fifth in the 200 (25.03), and
Alyssa Duncan (East Troy/East Troy), fifth in the 5000 (18:12.08). Dreikosen and Sondgeroth also contributed to UW-W's fifth place 4x100 relay, which also included
Kelsey Jones (Janesville/Parker) and
Kristen Heitsman (Janesville/Parker), timed in 47.99. Dreikosen also helped the 4x400 relay team place third. The others members of the relay were Heitsman, Jones and Brom.
UW-Whitewater will continue to prepare for the NCAA III championship with the Dr. Keeler Invitational at North Central College in Naperville, Illinois, and a meet at UW-La Crosse May 11. The NCAA III Outdoor Track and Field Championship will be hosted by Claremont Mudd Scripps Colleges in Claremont, California May 24-26.

UW-Whitewater, the host, is sixth after Friday's competition in the

JoLyn Owen (Middleton/Middleton) led UW-W performers Friday with her third place finish in the javelin, throwing it 118-0. The javelin was the Warhawks' most productive event, with
Jacky Bigger (Twin Lakes/Wilmot Union) giving UW-W two scores, adding a sixth place with her mark of 110-9. UW-W also had two athletes add to the team total in the 3000 steeplechase.
Janna Wise (Verona/Verona) was timed in 1:36.86 for fifth place, and teammate
Paeton Wantuch (LaPorte, IN/LaPorte) took eighth, crossing the line in 11:48.61.
Other Warhawks that scored Friday included Lexie Songeroth, who finished fourth in the long jump at 17-10.25;
Janna Wise (Verona/Verona), fifth in the 3000 steeplechase in 11:36.86; and
Melanie Pilon (Waukesha/South), seventh with a height of 10-7.5 in the pole vault.
Demos advanced to the finals in the 100 hurdles, breaking her school record with a time of 14.77 in the preliminaries Friday. Her final will be Saturday.
Two WIAC records were set on the first day. Erin Kline of Stevens Point was timed in 14.33 in the 100 hurdle trials, where she will face Demos again Saturday. Alexia Child of Oshkosh broke the league's hammer throw record, spinning to a mark of 192-8. Those performances are also Foster Track facility records, which also saw records broken by Claire Elliot of La Crosse in the 400 trials in 56.51, Jordanne Greenup in the 200 meter trials in 24.47, and UW-Platteville's 4x800 relay team (Jozik, Cahill, Tank and Dillman), which crossed the line in 9:20.07.
Whitewater had season best performances in six events. In addition to those established by Demos, Wise, Sondgeroth and Owen, the 4x800 relay ran 10:50.7, and
Stephanie Noskowiak (Sun Prairie/Sun Prairie) went 1:07.31 in the 400 hurdles preliminary.
The WIAC meet will conclude Saturday. The first event Saturday is 10:00. Free parking is available adjacent to Foster Track, which is located west of Perkins Stadium and northwest of Williams Center on the UW-W campus.
