Box Score 1 |
Box Score 2 UW-Whitewater remained in first place with a doubleheader sweep in Superior Saturday, defeating the Yellowjackets 3-2 in eight innings and 9-1 in five innings to raise the Warhawks' Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference record to 12-2. UW-W, 29-7 overall, is
ranked fourteenth in the Division III national poll.
Katie Boyle (Greendale/Thomas More) had to work overtime in game one. The junior right hander went all eight innings, allowing seven hits. She struck out twelve and did not walk a batter. The twelve strikeouts is a team season high, a personal best, and tied for fifth highest in the school record book. The last time a Warhawk hurler struck out twelve was March 21, 2010 when
Jessica Stang (Minnetonka, MN/Minnetonka) punched out twelve in a win over Eastern Connecticut State University in Clermont, Florida.
Superior jumped in front on a two out, two run double by second baseman Kristen Haider in the second inning (two's wild here). The Warhawks tied the score in the top of the third on
Kelly McGrail (Tinley Park, IL/V.J. Andrew) single, an
Amanda Mertes (Des Plaines, IL/Elk Grove) sacrifice, a McGrail steal, a RBI single from
Mimi Ramirez (Chicago, IL/Trinity), a walk, and
Emily Epifanio (Park Ridge, IL/Maine South)'s run scoring double to left.
Boyle and Superior's Amanda Le Bard matched zeros the rest of the way through regulation. In the top of the eighth, with one out,
Paige Evangelista (Wheaton, IL/North) reached on an error. Epifanio moved the runner to second, and Sammie Seamon's two out single plated the winning run.
Epifanio went 3x4 to lead all hitters in the game. Boyle upped her record to 13-3.
After an "overtime", an undertime? UW-W led 9-0 after its first five at bats and ended the game on the run differential rule.
Seamon started where she ended game one, singling in Whitewater's first run in the second. Three straight singles and a fielder's choice in the third made it 2-0. McGrail's RBI single and Ramirez's two run inside the park home run, in the right center gap, made it 5-0 in the fourth.
Morgan Krisch (Plainfield, IL/Central)'s two run single highlighted a four run fifth and put UW-W in front 9-0, and the Yellowjackets lone run in the bottom of the inning couldn't stave off an early ending.
Ramirez went 3x3 as UW-W scored nine runs on eight hits.
Bekka Houda (Lisle, IL/Lisle), 10-2, allowed five hits, four walks and struck out six on the mound.
UW-W entered play Saturday tied with UW-Eau Claire at 10-2, and the Blugolds won game one of their doubleheader with UW-Oshkosh to up their mark to 11-2. Game two is in progress. UW-Whitewater concludes the WIAC regular season at Eau Claire Sunday. The winner of the WIAC championship hosts the league's postseason tournament, which begins play Friday.
