Zweifelhofer Third in USBC Nationals... To Appear on CBS Sports May 4

Recorded on April 21, the CBS Sports Network will air the the USBC Women's Intercollegiate Singles Championship on Friday, May 4th at 9 pm (Central).

UW-Whitewater sophomore Katie Zweifelhofer lost 221-170 to Elise Bolton of the University of Nebraska in a semifinal match of the United States Bowling Congress Intercollegiate Singles Championship at Sun Valley Lanes in Lincoln, Nebraska Saturday.  Zweifelhofer tied for third place in her second national tournament appearance, the highest finish ever by a UW-Whitewater bowler in national competition.

In Saturday's other semifinal Georgia Drewes of Newman College beat USBC amateur of the year Jazreel Tan of Wichita State University 227-207.  Drewes beat Bolton 204-147 for the national singles title.

Zweifelhofer earned a berth in the USBC national tourney by finishing fourth in her USBC sectional.  In the placement round Tuesday she placed second in the field of sixteen, earning a bye into the third round.  She defeated Chelsea Essenmacher of Adrian College Wednesday to advance to the semifinals.

The USBC tournament wraps up the 2011-2012 season for UW-Whitewater bowling.

Whitewater's Katie Zweifelhofer has earned a spot in the semi-finals of the USBC Intercollegiate Singles Championship at the Sun Valley Lanes in Lincoln, Nebraska after her performance on day two of the tournament Wednesday.

Zweifelhofer won her round three matchup against Chelsea Essenmacher of Adrian College 657-575. Her game scores consisted of 183, 289, and 185. Her second game score of 289 broke the school record for an individual single game score, previously held by Carrie Zuege (279) in 2003. Her combined series of 657 ranks fifth in the 2011-2012 UW-W statistics.

The semi-final match between Zweifelhofer and Nebraska's Elise Bolton will take place on Saturday at 3 pm Central time.

Tracy Fakes (Columbus/Columbus ) short of a victory in her round one match against Amanda Dodd of Calumet 625-526.

The semifinals and finals will be televised on CBS Sports Network on a tape-delay basis, with the women airing May 4 at 10 pm Eastern.

UW-Whitewater sophomore Katie Zweifelhofer is in second place in the United States Bowling Congress Intercollegiate Singles Championship after the first day of play at the Sun Valley Lanes in Lincoln, Nebraska Tuesday.

The USBC field is made up of 24 men and 16 women, all of whom qualified through sectional play.  Zweifelhofer qualified with a fourth place finish at her sectional, with the top four from each of four sectionals advancing to the national competition.  The singles participants bowled six games of qualifying Tuesday to determine seeding for the single-elimination match-play bracket, which consists of three-game, total-pinfall matches.

Zweifelhofer bowled 198, 248, 195, 237, 183, and 169 Tuesday.  The 248 game is the second highest by a Warhawk bowler this year, and her 680 series is also second in the 2011-2012 UW-W statistics.  Zweifelhofer entered the tournament with UW-W's top average, 191.7.  She earned two byes in the bracket tourney with her scores Tuesday. 

Whitewater's Tracy Fakes (Columbus/Columbus ), who earned a spot as a replacement when a sectional qualifier had to withdraw, finished eleventh in the position round.  Fakes bowled 176, 178, 182, 167, 193, and 208.  She will also advance to the bracket rounds, beginning Wednesday.

All qualifying and match play rounds of both events will be shown live on BOWL.com's BowlTV, while the champions will be crowned on national television. The semifinals and finals of the Intercollegiate Singles Championships will be shown on CBS Sports Network in four one-hour shows every Friday at 10 p.m. Eastern starting May 4.

Zweifelhofer also qualified for the USBC national championship last year, where she earned the twelfth seed after the first day.  She won her first match on the second day, in bracket play, then was eliminated in the second bracket round.
