Box Score The seventeenth ranked UW-Whitewater women's volleyball team fell to UW-Platteville 3-1 (25-12, 25-21, 20-25, 25-21) on the road Tuesday night.
The Pioneers went on a 4-0 early set run to take the lead 9-5 forcing a Whitewater timeout. Each team traded the serve twice in the next four points to make the score 11-7 in favor of UW-P. It was all Pioneers from that point on as Platteville went on a 14-5 run to close out the set and take an early match lead 1-0.
Whitewater used three Pioneer errors to start set two to take a 3-0 lead. Platteville answered with its own run of four points. Again the teams traded points until the Pioneers were able to put four points in a row together off of three blocks to take a 13-11. The Warhawks were unable to mount the comeback and soon found themselves down 2-0 in the match.
UW-W turned the tables on Platteville in set three. With a score of 10-6 in favor of the Warhawks, UW-P battled back to within one to make it 10-9. UW-W answered with a 4-1 run to extend the lead to 14-10 and added another 4-1 a couple of rallies later to go up five, 18-13. The Pioneers once again bounced back using a 4-0 run to make the score 18-17, Whitewater maintaining the lead. A 3-1 run by the Warhawks but the set out of reach for Platteville as UW-W went on to win 25-20 to close the gap 2-1 in the match.
The beginning of set four was all Whitewater, or all
Leanna Lillge (Ixonia/Watertown). The Warhawks outside hitter notched the first three points of the set off kills and added two more in the next three points. Platteville had an answer though coming back with four kills of their own in the next seven points to take the lead 7-6. The Warhawks regained the lead, 13-10, after a 6-1 run. Holding true to the pattern, the Pioneers answered with a 7-2 run, regaining the lead 17-15. The teams traded points but the Warhawks were unable to overcome the deficit.
UW-Platteville's main advantage in the game came from the defensive side of the ball. The Pioneers posted 13 total blocks, three solo and 20 assisted, in the match compared to four total, all assist blocks, for the Warhawks.
Lillge posted a match high and team season high of 21 kills and added ten digs. Libero
Kelsey Nobilio (Johnsburg, IL/Johnsburg) added another tally to her current streak of double figure dig matches with 24 in the contest.
Kaylin Byer (Merrill/Merrill) and
Chelsea Mutton (Rockford, IL/Rockford East) added double digit digs with 11 and 10 respectively.
Kim Frei (West Bend/West Bend West) posted 46 of the teams 49 assists in the match.
Whitewater is now 16-7 this season and 3-2 in the Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference. Platteville is 17-7 overall and 2-3 in league play.
The Warhawks will host Elmhurst College Wednesday, October 10 at 7:00.
