Tie in Superior

Box Score UW-Whitewater and UW-Superior battled through two overtimes Saturday, and still couldn't come to a decision, leaving the field with a 1-1 tie in Duluth, Minnesota Saturday.

Whitewater made a big to get on the board early, with two shots on goal by John Gottwald (South Milwaukee, Wis./South Milwaukee) and another by Sam Kuchenreuther (Brown Deer, Wis./Brown Deer) in the first seven minutes of the game, but none found the back of the net.

The deadlock was broken by Superior's Ben Royce on the first shot on goal of the game for UW-S, coming off an Alberto Rivero assist at 9:02.

Warhawk keeper Matt Mikesell (Waukesha/Kettle Moraine) kept a Nate Engel shot out at 13:13, and Superior's Matt Elder stopped Logan Fye (Rockford, IL/Winnebago) and Xander Lien (Pewaukee, Wis./Arrowhead) midway through the first period.  Fye got another opportunity at 40:05, and Kyle Sundby (Verona/Verona) has a chance with just over a minute left in the half, but Elder kept the Warhawks off the board.

Whitewater out-shot Superior 9-4 in the first half, including a 7-2 edge in shots on goal.

Superior put more pressure on early in the second half, testing Mikesell three times in the first twenty minutes, to no avail.  Michael Montanye (Mukwonago, Wis./Mukwonago)'s shot at 64:31 tested Elder, but it remained 1-0.

Finally, on his fourth shot of the game, Logan Fye (Rockford, IL/Winnebago) knotted the game with his fifth goal of the season.  The goal, at 81:26, was assisted by Kuchenreuther, his second of the season.

The only shot on goal in the remaining time came, again, from Fye at 88:51, but Elder came up with the save again.

Neither team managed a shot on goal in the first overtime, and (who else) Fye got free again to test Elder at 116:19 in the second OT, but Elder hung on to the tie.

UW-W totaled 23 shots, nine on goal, in the game.  UW-S had 15 shots, five on net.  UW-W also had a 5-1 advantage in corner kicks.

UW-W is 4-4-2 overall and 0-1-1 in the Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference.  UW-W is 7-5-1, and the Yellowjackets have the early league lead at 1-1-1.

Whitewater continues its fall color trek, playing Finlandia University in the UP Sunday.  The Warhawks will host Illinois Wesleyan University Wednesday at 7:30 at Fiskum Field.  Fiskum Field is on the north end of campus, north of Williams Center/Kachel Fieldhouse and west of Perkins Stadium.  Free parking is adjacent to the field.
