Schaefer a Champ Twice, Bayliss Once at ITAs

On the final day of the ITA Midwest Regional Championship in St. Peter, Minnesota, Kalla Schaefer (Madison/Madison Memorial) won the singles title and then paired with Alexandra Bayliss (Sheboygan/North) to win the doubles title.  The tournament spanned three days and featured the top 18 schools in the region.

ITA Scoreboard

Schaefer advance to the semifinal in the top half of singles after play on Saturday, then defeated Kathryn Schmidt of Carleton 6-2, 5-7, 6-4 on Sunday.  Schaefer then matched up against the winner of the bottom half of the bracket in the final, McKennah Edwards of St. Mary's, and defeated her 6-2, 6-2 for the overall individual title.

Bayliss, also playing at singles, advanced to the semifinal of the bottom half of the singles bracket, but fell to Edwards 6-2, 6-1.

Schaefer and Bayliss wrapped up the tournament taking home the doubles title in convincing fashion over Megan Gaard and Alex Erickson of Gustavus, 6-3, 6-3.

Schaefer and Bayliss will both advance to the ITA National Small College Championship, together as a doubles team and Schaefer as a singles player, which takes place in Mobile, Alabama from October 13-16.  Schaefer qualified for the event in 2008, as a freshman, but lost both of her singles matches in three sets.

The ITA National Small College Championships began in 1986 and annually crowns men's and women's singles and doubles national champions in each of the ITA's four small college divisions (NCAA Divisions II and III, NAIA and Junior/Community College).
