The UW-Whitewater volleyball team swept UW-Superior 3-0 (25-19, 26-24, 25-15) Friday at the Kris Russell Volleyball Arena on the campus of UW-Whitewater. The Warhawks, 9-4 overall and 1-1 in the Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference, are ranked 21st in the most recent American Volleyball Coaches Association top 25 poll. Superior is now 8-5 and 0-1.

The Warhawks used four consecutive points early in the first game to go up 7-2 on the 'Jackets. The teams seesawed until 14-8 when Superior called a timeout. Again the teams traded points with the Yellowjackets narrowing the margin slightly at 22-17 before calling a second timeout. The Warhawks closed out the first game scoring three of the last five points.
Superior vaulted out to a 3-0 lead in game two but the Warhawks battled back to tie the game 10-10. The teams went back and forth for a bit with neither team leading by more than two the rest of the game. After a Whitewater timeout, down 18-20, the Warhawks rattled off three straight points. Superior reciprocated with a timeout, down 21-20, and scored three straight points. The Warhawks followed suit, this time with no timeout, to notch three consecutive points and take the lead 24-23. The 'Jackets tied the game at 24 before the Warhawks finished off the match with the next two points.
Game three was quick and painless, if you're a Warhawk fan. The Warhawks were up 11-6 when Superior called a timeout, and then up 17-9 when they called a second timeout. The damage was done and Superior could not rally as the Warhawks went on to finish the game, and the match, 25-15.
Heidi Buss (Cedarburg/Cedarburg) dished out 37 assists;
Leanna Lillge (Ixonia/Watertown) and
Sofia Sanchez (Janesville/Craig) were on the receiving end of ten each. Four Warhawks recorded double-digit digs. They were
Kelsey Nobilio (Johnsburg, IL/Johnsburg),
Kelli Trautmann (Seymour/Little Chute), Sanchez, and Buss.
The Warhawks hit .248 in the match, a significantly higher mark than their opponent's .090.
UW-W will play another WIAC match on Saturday when they host UW-Eau Claire at noon in the Kris Russell Volleyball Arena.
