Goals Hard to Come By, Warhawks and Eagles Tie

Box Score

A tale of two halves, and then some.  UW-Whitewater and UW-La Crosse played to a 0-0 tie in La Crosse Saturday in the Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference opener for both squads.

Whitewater owned the first half.  The Warhawks had seven shots on goal that were blocked by a defender or saved by Eagle goalie Sagan Pizzingrilli.  It began with a header by Kaitlyn Fritsch (Monona Grove/Monona Grove) that was blocked at 7:05.  Ten minutes later Laura Jacobson put the ball on net for UW-L, but Whitewater's Jordan Myers (Aurora, IL/Waubonsie Valley) made the save.  Then it was more Whitewater, as Pamela Lisowe (New Holstein/New Holstein), Alyssa Chamberlain (De Pere/De Pere), Kelsey Finn (Glendale/Nicolet), Riley Kirchoff (Pewaukee/Pewaukee), Emily Gerber (DeForest/DeForest), and Becky Plese (Sussex/Arrowhead) had scoring opportunities --- but the teams went into halftime 0-0.

And then someone flipped the switch.  Gerber tested Pizzingrilli with the first shot on goal in the second half, but Gerber's next shot at 85:30 was the only other Whitewater shot on goal in the half.  Meanwhile La Crosse had scoring opportunities at 50:18, 51:42, 62:26, 63:11, 64:08, 77:51, 83:41, and 86:20 --- and UW-W defenders or Myers kept them all out of the net.

La Crosse had the only shot on goal in the first overtime, and neither team could beat the defense in the second OT.

Whitewater had 13 shots in the first half, three in the second for 16 total.  La Crosse had 2 shots in the first half, 13 in the second, and one in each overtime for 17.  Both teams had eight corner kicks and six saves.  Myers lowered her goals against average to 1.46 with the shutout, her first of the season.

UW-W is 2-3-1 overall, 0-0-1 in the WIAC.  La Crosse is 3-2-1 and 0-0-1 in league play.

Whitewater will host Ripon College Sunday, September 18 at 5:00 for Family Day.  The game will be played at Fiskum Field on the UW-W campus.  The field is west of Perkins Stadium and northwest of Williams Center/Kachel Fieldhouse.  Free parking is adjacent to the field.
