In most events preliminary heats or competition will take place, with the top performers advancing to the final of their event. The top eight finishers in each event, including relays, earn All-America honors at the NCAA III championship.
Qualifiers for the national meet are based on performance standards, with the top performers qualifying as individuals (there is no team qualifying) with the size of the meet closely tied to the number of schools sponsoring a sport and historical data on performances in each event.
UW-Whitewater finished twenty-fourth in the NCAA III indoor championship in March, with
Shelby Demos (Janesville/Parker), a two time All-American, leading the way with a second place in the high jump. The group also includes
Dana Thompson (Belleville/Belleville), the 2008 NCAA III discus champion. The Warhawks' best finish in the NCAA outdoor meet is a fourth place in 2000. Illinois Wesleyan University won the 2010 NCAA III women's outdoor meet.
