Shelby Demos (Janesville/Parker) and
Sara Poppe (Germantown/Kettle Moraine Lutheran) were named UW-Whitewater women's track and field athletes of the week for their efforts last weekend. Both athletes competed at the Drake Alternative, hosted by UW-W at the Rex Foster Track. No team scores were kept, but several UW-W athletes had outstanding performances.
Demos met NCAA provisional standards and broke the school record in the 100 meter hurdles, crossing the line in 14.83. Even though she finished second, her time eclipsed the previous mark of 14.94, held by Stacey Lueptow since 1989.
Poppe broke a school record and is headed to Ohio for the NCAA Division III Championships, meeting the automatic standard in the triple jump with a leap of 39-4.5. This ranks her first in the conference by 0.5 meters, and fifth in the nation. She also had a second place finish in the long jump with a season-best mark of 18-4.25 (5.59m), which is first in the conference as well. On Tuesday, Poppe added WIAC Athlete of the Week honors.
The Warhawks head to Platteville this weekend (May 6-7) for the WIAC Outdoor Championships.
