Poppe and Demos Have Strong Showing at Rex Foster Open

The UW-Whitewater women's track & field team had a strong showing Friday evening at the Rex Foster Open held at UW-Whitewater. UW- Whitewater sophomore Shelby Demos (Janesville/Parker) led the way for the Warhawks qualifying provisionally for the NCAA Division III Outdoor Track & Field Championship winning the high jump with a height of 5'6". Demos tied her previous school record and the f.Foster Track record, formerly held by both Michelle Reidi of UW-Stevens Point and Sue Burke of UW-Oshkosh.

Senior throwers Jessa Luebke (Tomah/Tomah) and Megan Blake (Waukesha/Waukesha South) took first and third place in the hammer throw with throws of 168' 0.5" and 157' 8.5" respectively. Both Luebke and Blake qualified provisionally for the NCAA Division III Outdoor Track & Field Championship. Blake and Luebke also took first and second in the shot put with throws of 41' 10" and 40' 8.75", while senior Dana Thompson (Belleville/Belleville) took third place with a throw of 39' 8".

Thompson and Luebke also competed in the discus throw taking first and second. Thompson's first place throw was 142' 5" and Luebke's second place throw was 121'. Jenny Winkler (St. Cloud/New Holstein) placed third with a throw of 119' 8".

Warhawk runners swept the top three places in the 1500 meter run. Samantha Kasprszak, Megan Gang (Fort Atkinson/Fort Atkinson) and Paeton Wantuch (LaPorte, IN/LaPorte) finished first, second, and third. Kasprzak had a time of 5:16.66, Gang 5:20.33 and Wantuch 5:26.27.

Senior Sara Poppe (Germantown/Kettle Moraine Lutheran) had arguably the strongest performance of the evening taking first place in the triple jump with a mark of 37' 3.75" and the long jump at 18' 0". Sophomore Jill Hernke (Palmyra/Kettle Moraine) placed second in the triple jump with 32' 9.5". Poppe also placed third in the 100 meter dash with a time of 13.02 seconds while Kristen Heitsman (Janesville/Parker) finished fourth with 13.26 seconds.

Junior Madeline Roznos (Reedsburg/Reedsburg) took first place and recorded in the 5000 meter run with a time of 17:56.68.

Freshman hurdler Amber Athey (Adams/Adams-Friendship) took first place in the 100 meter hurdles with a time of 18.57. Stephanie Noskowiak (Sun Prairie/Sun Prairie) edged Athey for third place and season best with a time of 1:12.63 in the 400 meter hurdles. Athey took fourth with a time of 1:16.77.

The 4x400 meter relay team comprised of Megan Strandell (Oswego, IL/Oswego), Kelsey Jones (Janesville/Parker), Athey, and Janna Wise (Verona/Verona) took second place with a time of 4:19.72.

Jones also competed in the 200 meter dash placing second with a time of 27.19 seconds. Strandell placed fourth in the 400 meter dash clocking in at 1:01.91.

Pole vaulters Caitlin Koller (West Allis/Hale) and Loryn Kressin (Greenfield/Wisconsin Lutheran) took first and second place with vaults of 10' 0", Koller edged Kressin based on the least number of vaults.

JoLyn Owen (Middleton/Middleton), 5' 2.25", and Lauren Strohmaier (Genoa, IL/Kingston), 5' 0.25, took second and fourth places in the high jump.

Megan Rennhack of UW-Madison took first place and set a Foster Track record in the javelin throw with a throw of 154' 7.5".
 
The Warhawks' next meet will take place on April 15, in Rock Island, Illinois.
