Demos and Poppe Win Twice in Warhawk Classic

Sara Poppe (Germantown/Kettle Moraine Lutheran) and Shelby Demos (Janesville/Parker) both won two events each for UW-Whitewater in the Warhawk Classic Saturday in the Kachel Fieldhouse in Whitewater, Wisconsin.  UW-Whitewater finished fourth in the eight team field.

Team scores were:  UW-Oshkosh 145, University of Chicago 128, North Central College 103, UW-Whitewater 99,  Saint Norbert College 61, Augustana College 36, Loras College 35, and the University of Wisconsin-Madison 13.  Oshkosh is ranked first in the United States Track and Field and Cross Country Coaches Association Division III poll, with North Central fourteenth, and UW-Whitewater twenty-first.

Poppe earned first place points for UW-W in the long jump, 17-11.25, and the triple jump, 36-7.  Demos equaled Poppe's point total with wins in the 55 hurdles, 8.61, and the high jump, 5-5.75.  Demos actually recorded a team season best time of 8.59 in the hurdles in a preliminary heat.

Jessa Luebke (Tomah/Tomah) contributed points in two events, placing third in the weight throw, with her 52-5.25 both a team season best and a provisional qualifying mark for the NCAA III indoor track and field championship, and earning seventh place in the shot put (38-8.75).  Stephanie Cowling (Neenah/Neenah) also placed in two events, with a second place in the long jump, 17-5.75, and fifth place in the triple jump, 34-9.75.

UW-W's athletes also notched numerous team season best performances Saturday.  Kelsey Jones (Janesville/Parker) was timed in 27.18 in the 200 meters, which is a team season best.  Jones and the field trailed Camille Davis of UW-Oshkosh who set the Kachel Fieldhouse record with her 25.03.  The old mark was 25.05 Nadine Pieske of UW-0shkosh, set in 2007.  Stephanie Noskowiak (Sun Prairie/Sun Prairie) ran 1:03.5 in the 400 for another team season best, and Kristen Heitsman (Janesville/Parker)'s 7.55 in the preliminaries of the 55 also set a new standard for UW-W this year.  Janna Wise (Verona/Verona) ran 5:29.56 in the mile and Madeline Roznos (Reedsburg/Reedsburg) ran 18:36.52 in the 5000 to add to top performances of the 2011 indoor season.

The Warhawks will compete in the UST Showcase hosted by the University of Saint Thomas in Minneapolis, Minnesota Friday, February 11.  The next home appearance, at least by some team members, will be the Multi-Event Last Chance Meet March 4.
