Five members of the UW-Whitewater softball team were named to the All-Great Lake Region Team by the National Fastpitch Coaches Association.
Sophomore pitcher Jessica Stang (Minnetonka, MN/Minnetonka), and senior outfielders Amy Gahl (Beloit/Parkview) and Suzanne Gersich (Wadsworth, IL/Warren) were selected to the first team. Junior outfielder Lauren Cruz (Des Plaines, IL/Maine West) was named to the second team, and junior shortstop Amanda LeBeau (Worth, IL/Richards) was a third team pick. The first team picks from eight regions will be included on an All-America ballot, with the results released later this month.
All five of the UW-W players were also named to the Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference First Team earlier this week. Cruz was a NFCA Third Team All-American in 2008, and Gahl was named to the second team in 2007.
Stang has a 19-2 record, 0.82 earned run average, and has struck out 177 batters in 141.1 innings, with just 23 walks. She also has five saves. Gahl carries a .465 batting average with 51 runs scored and nine stolen bases. She is the UW-Whitewater and WIAC all-time in hits. Gersich is batting .500 with 43 runs scored, seven home runs, 14 doubles, five triples, a slugging percentage of .875, and an on base percentage of .560. Cruz is hitting .322 with team highs in both home runs, 9, and RBI's, 47. LeBeau is at .388, 5 and 32 in the triple crown categories.
UW-W won the WIAC championship and earned a berth in the National Collegiate Athletic Association Division III Championship Tournament. The Warhawks are 36-6.
