The UW-Whitewater baseball team lost their first game in the Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference Tournament on Friday to UW-Stevens Point by a score of 12-8. The loss means the Warhawks play again on Friday against UW-Oshkosh. If UW-W loses again they will be eliminated from the tournament. The win for the Pointers (28-13) puts them in the championship game that begins on Saturday at noon at Prucha Field in Whitewater. UW-Whitewater's tournament web site

Stevens Point scored a run in the top of the first to take the games first lead. They piled on four more in the top of the third to take a 5-0 lead.
UW-W responded with two runs in the bottom of the third. An RBI single by Matt Beyer (Janesville/Parker) plated the first run, while a Stevens Point error accounted for the second. Three more runs in the bottom of the fifth by the Warhawks tied the game at five. Ben Kuhlmann (Minneapolis, MN/Southwest) ripped a three run homer in the inning, his fifth of the season.
The Warhawks then took the lead in the bottom of the sixth with two solo shots, one by Tony Wong (Appleton/West) and the other by Cory Trepanier (Oconto/Oconto).
Stevens Point stormed back to take the lead in the top of the eighth scoring five runs to go up 10-7.
Whitewater pulled to within two after a Matt Millar (Stoughton/Stoughton)grounder scored Wong. That was all the Warhawks could do as they watched the Pointers score two more in the top of the ninth to bring the final to 12-8.
Both starting pitchers, Aaron Dott (Green Lake/Green Lake) for UW-W and Scott Williams for UW-SP, struck out seven batters. The Warhawks surrendered eight walks in the game.
Beyer and Trepanier were the only two Warhawks to record multiple hits. The Warhawks notched ten hits in the game while the Pointers tallied fourteen.
The Warhawks (24-16) face UW-Oshkosh on Friday evening. If they win they will advance to face the Pointers again in the WIAC championship game at Prucha Field in Whitewater at noon on Saturday. If they lose, Oshkosh advances to the championship.
