Warhawks Take Two at Stevens Point, Now 18-2

The University of Wisconsin-Whitewater softball team, ranked seventh and fourteenth in the two latest national division III polls, defeated UW-Stevens Point 9-0 and 11-4 upping their mark to 18-2 overall as they remain unbeaten in the Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference, 8-0.

The Warhawk offense started out hot right away in the first inning with Amy Gahl (Beloit/Parkview) coming around to score on an Amanda LeBeau (Worth, IL/Richards) single and the Pointers walking a run in.

Nicole Bothun (Fort Atkinson/Fort Atkinson) led off the second inning with her first homer of the season and Gahl followed with another homerun, her third this year. Lauren Cruz (Des Plaines, IL/Maine West) homered later in the inning bringing in Suzanne Gersich (Wadsworth, IL/Warren) and giving Whitewater four more runs and the lead 6-0.

Ashley Smith (Elgin, IL/St. Edward Catholic) tripled in the third to bring in Bothun and Gahl. Smith would also come around to score on an error bringing the score to 9-0 in favor of the Warhawks.

Jessica Stang (Minnetonka, MN/Minnetonka) picked up her ninth win of the season shutting out the Pointers with four strike outs and just one walk allowed. Gahl led the Warhawk offense going 3X3 and scoring three times.

Similar to the first game, the Whitewater offense jumped on the bats scoring four runs in the first inning on a grand slam by Cruz. The Warhawks would score in four of the next six innings with the biggest inning in the top of the seventh. Whitewater would bring in four more runs on singles from Gersich and LeBeau as a Pointer error also allowed a Warhawk to cross the plate. UW-W went on to win 11-4.

Gersich led the offense going 4X5 with two RBIs and three runs scored. Gahl went 3X5 scoring three times and four more Warhawks went 2X4 from the plate including Cruz as she added four RBIs on the grand slam and scored twice.

Stacy Bahr (Racine/Park) got the win for the Warhawks going four innings and is now 4-0 on the season. Dianna Frisbie (Juneau/Dodgeland) came in for relief pitching three innings striking out six and walking two.

UW-W will be competing in Dubuque, Iowa Thursday, April 9, a doubleheader that was rescheduled from earlier this season.

The next home matchup for the Warhawks is scheduled for Friday, April 10 as a doubleheader against Illinois Wesleyan University at 3:00 at van Steenderen diamond.
