Stevens Point took an early 4-0 lead in the first game before the Warhawks could score in the top of the fourth. The Warhawks then took the lead, 6-4, after a five-run sixth inning. The Warhawks recorded those five runs, three singles and two doubles, on five hits and two Pointer errors.
The UW-W lead was trimmed to one in the bottom of the sixth, but the Pointers got no closer as the 'Hawks added an insurance run in the top of the ninth for the final score of 7-5.
The second game also had the Warhawks coming from behind to win. This time UW-Stevens Point took a 3-0 lead in the bottom of the third before UW-W scored. The 'Hawks tallied two runs in the top of the fourth to pull within one run. Both runs were scored on back-to-back solo homers; the first by
Kevin Zalnis (Woodstock, IL/Woodstock) and the second by
Rob Coe (Appleton/North).
The Warhawks took a 4-3 lead in the top of the eighth. The first three batters in the inning singled to bring up Zalnis who knocked a sacrifice fly to left field to tie the game. A Coe double scored the second run of the inning and gave the Warhawks a lead they never relinquished.
Three more runs in the top of the ninth gave the 'Hawks a 7-3 lead.
Ben Kuhlmann (Minneapolis, MN/Southwest) hit a two-out, bases loaded single to left field that scored one. A Stevens Point throwing error on Kuhlmann's hit allowed two more runners to score.
Stevens Point tried to come back in the bottom of the ninth but starting pitcher
Aaron Dott (Green Lake/Green Lake) stymied their effort after giving up a two-run homerun. Dott went the distance giving up six hits while striking out eleven. Dott improves to 3-2 this season.
Coe totaled five hits and four RBIs in the doubleheader.
Sam Petrasko (Appleton/East) chipped in five hits and scored three runs while
Ryan Leavitt (Merrill/Merrill), Kuhlmann, and Zalnis each recorded one or more hits in each game.
Jason Hooper (Lake Mills/Lake Mills) recorded the win in game one and improves to 2-1 this season.
The Warhawks will play Carroll University in a doubleheader on Tuesday at Prucha Field in Whitewater with the first pitch in game one scheduled for 2:00 pm.
