Warhawks Win Suspended Game

It took a week, but UW-Whitewater finally defeated UW-Platteville 7-5 Wednesday at Prucha Field in Whitewater, Wisconsin.  The game began a week ago, April 22, but had to be suspended after eight innings because of darkness.  The umpires took advantage of the schedule, knowing that the two schools were also scheduled to play a doubleheader April 29, so the suspended game was rescheduled to be finished before the doubleheader.

Whitewater scored first in the game that began April 22, with Ben Kuhlmann (Minneapolis, MN/Southwest) homering with two out in the first inning.  Matt Beyer (Janesville/Parker) singled in a run in the second, and that 2-0 stayed through four innings as Jason Hooper (Lake Mills/Lake Mills) limited the Pioneers to one hit.

Platteville halved the margin with a run in the fifth, but UW-W added four in the bottom half of the inning to provide the winning margin, 6-1 at the time.  Travis Wessels (Tomah/Tomah) singled in two runs and Tom Zimmerman (Pewaukee/Pewaukee) brought two more in with a double in the fifth.

UW-P closed the margin with three in the sixth, making it 6-4, but Whitewater got one of them back in the bottom of the inning.  The scoring ended with the Pioneers' run in the seventh.

That all happened April 22.  On the 29th, UW-W's Aaron Dott (Green Lake/Green Lake) came on in relief to get the last three outs.

Kuhlmann had two hits, two runs scored and one RBI, and Wessels had two of each to lead Warhawk hitters.  Shawn Tobie and Matt Paulus had two hits each for Platteville, with Tobie scoring twice and Paulus driving in two.  Hooper, 6-2, picked up the win for UW-W.

And then it was on to the doubleheader that remained to be played April 29.
