Shutout of Alma Ups Warhawk Win Streak to Fourteen

UW-Whitewater ran its winning streak to fourteen with a 1-0 win over Alma College (MI) in a game played in Wheaton, Illinois Saturday.  UW-W, ranked seventh nationally, had a second game scheduled for Saturday, versus host Wheaton College, rained out.

It should be obvious in the lowest scoring game of the season that the game was dominated by the pitchers.  Whitewater's Jessica Stang (Minnetonka, MN/Minnetonka), 16-1, and Alma's T. Leddy, 11-4, combined to allow six hits in the game, three by each team.  Stang walked one and struck out seven, and Leddy walked one and struck out four.

Stang and Leddy hurled blanks for the first five innings.  In the top of the sixth Alma put a runner in scoring positon, for the first and only time in the game.  In the bottom of that inning UW-W's Ashley Smith (Elgin, IL/St. Edward Catholic) reached on a fielder's choice, Suzanne Gersich (Wadsworth, IL/Warren) doubled Smith to third, and Smith scored the only run of the game on a ground out by Lauren Cruz (Des Plaines, IL/Maine West).

Amy Gahl (Beloit/Parkview) had one of Whitewater's three hits, extending her hitting streak to thirteen games.

UW-W, 32-3, will host Elmhurst College Tuesday, April 28 at 3:00.  The doubleheader, the final home appearance of the season, will be played at Van Steenderen Field.  Van Steenderen Field is west of Perkins Stadium and north of Williams Center on the north end of campus.  There is no admission fee for home games, and free parking is available in the Perkins Stadium lot.
