Davis Qualifies Automatically, Warhawks Finish Third

The Whitewater men's track and field team finished third of thirteen teams on Saturday at the Meet of Champions hosted by Augustana College. Ten Warhawks placed in the top three in eleven events and twelve season bests were also accomplished at this meet. Shaun Davis (Edgerton/Edgerton) achieved an automatic qualifying spot with his distance in the discus (170-06 ft) and Matt Kovnesky (Fort Atkinson/Fort Atkinson) qualified provisionally in his 800 meter run with a time of (1:52.87).  The two qualify for the National Collegiate Athletic Association Division III outdoor track and field Championship that begins on May 20 in Marietta, Ohio.

Team standings were as follows:
UW-Stevens Point 213.50, Augustana 195, UW-Whitewater 159.50, Monmouth College 118, UW-Platteville 92.50, Carthage College 63, St. Ambrose 48, Luther College 46.50, Wartburg 10, Bethel University 6, Ashford University 5, St. Olaf College 4, and UW-Oshkosh 2.

Of the ten top three finishers, there were three people capturing first place. Kovnesky finished first in the 800 meter run, Marcus Smith (Milwaukee/West Allis Central) in the triple jump (46-09 ft) and Davis in the discus.

Second place finishers consisted of Davis in the hammer throw (174-04 ft), Cory Lockridge (Milwaukee/Rufus King) in the long jump (22-03 ft), and Mathias Werve (Kenosha/Tremper) in the 5000 meters (15:24.35).

Three Whitewater field competitors and two relay teams finished third. Third place field competitors consisted of Ben Stringer (Assumption, IL/Central A&M) in the discus (170-06 ft), Joe Schneider (Wausau, WI/Wausau) in the shot put (48-00 ft), and Luke Buchholz (Whitewater/Whitewater) in the high jump (6-04.75). The 4x100 relay team came in with a time of 42.87 to finish third and the 4x400 team crossed with a time of 3:18.86.

The next meet for the Warhawks will be April 23-25 for the Drake Relays in Des Moines, Iowa. Times are to be announced. The Loras College Invitational will also take place on Saturday, April 25 in Dubuque, Iowa (TBA).
