Warhawks 4-0 After Win over Bethel

Florida has been kind to the Warhawk softball team thus far as they improved to 4-0 in the state, as well as to start the season, after a 7-3 victory over Bethel University on Saturday. The game was the second of the day for UW-W who earlier defeated Keene State by a score of 16-11. Bethel falls to 7-8 for the season.

UW-W fell behind after the top of the first as Bethel's leadoff player scored the lone run of the inning. The 'Hawks answered with four of their own runs in the bottom of the first to take the lead for good. Suzanne Gersich (Wadsworth, IL/Warren) drove in Amy Smith for the first run of the inning, and later scored on a Lauren Cruz (Des Plaines, IL/Maine West) single. Liz Yucuis (S. Elgin, IL/St. Charles East) doubled to score the final two runs of the inning.

Three more insurance runs in the bottom of the second were all the Warhawks needed to secure the victory. Gersich notched her second RBI of the game after a single scored Smith. Amanda LeBeau (Worth, IL/Richards) drove in the other two runs on a two out single to cap the scoring for the inning and the game.

Bethel tallied a single run in each of the top of the fourth and fifth innings, but that was all they could muster for a comeback.

Stacy Bahr (Racine/Park) earned the victory for the Warhawks in her first start of the season going five innings and giving up only two runs while striking out four.

Four different Warhawks recorded two hits and four others recorded one. Smith, Gersich and Cruz each notched two runs each to go along with their two hits.

The Warhawks return to action on Sunday in Florida when they play single games against Western Connecticut State and Eastern Connecticut State. The Warhawks will remain in Florida until March 26.
