In an early season matchup of ranked teams, #16 UW-Whitewater shut out #25 Carthage University 9-0 Friday afternoon in Port Charlotte, Florida.
box score
Pitching dominated the first four innings, 0-0 with the teams combining for just three hits.
The Warhawks finally broke through in the bottom of the fifth, sandwiching four hits around a Red Men error. Travis Wessels (Tomah/Tomah) and Ben Kuhlmann (Minneapolis, MN/Southwest) contributed RBI singles.
That was all the help that Aaron Dott (Green Lake/Green Lake) would need. Dott went eight innings, allowed three hits, walked two and struck out nine. Kale Olson (Rochester, MN/Century) gave up one hit in relief in the ninth.
Sam Petrasko (Appleton/East) added another run in the seventh, singling, stealing second, moving to third on a ground out and scoring on a Red Men error.
Whitewater concluded the scoring with five more in the eighth, on just four hits. A hit batter and another Carthage error aided UW-W, with Cory Trepanier (Oconto/Oconto) striking the big blow, a two run double.
Wessels went 3x5 with a pair of runs batted in for UW-W, with Trepanier and Derek Murphy (Verona/Verona) contributing two hits apiece.
The nine runs on twelve hits are both, admittedly early, season highs for UW-W.
UW-W is 4-2, 4-1 versus Division III competition. Carthage is 4-3.
Whitewater will play Otterbein College Saturday in Port Charlotte.
