In the first game of their spring trip on Thursday, the UW-Whitewater baseball team defeated the College of Wooster 6-5 in Port Charlotte, Florida. The Warhawks are 2-2 this season while Wooster falls to 11-3.

The Warhawks were first on the scoreboard in the top of the second inning.
Tony Wong (Appleton/West) scored on a sac fly by
Mike Kenseth (Milwaukee/West Allis Hale) after being hit by a pitch and advancing to third on a wild pitch. The Fighting Scots answered in the bottom of the second when catcher Shane Swearingen singled to drive in Matthew Johnson.
Wooster took a 2-1 lead in the bottom of a third scoring an unearned run. The Warhawk offense went to work in the top of the fourth scoring four runs on one hit and an error. The inning started with a
Cory Trepanier (Oconto/Oconto) walk, followed by Wong being hit by another pitch, and then
Travis Wessels (Tomah/Tomah) walked to load the bases. Catcher
Derek Murphy (Verona/Verona) followed with a double to drive in Trepanier and Wong. A Wooster error led to the final two Whitewater runs in the inning to give UW-W a 5-2 lead.
Warhawk pitcher
Jason Hooper (Lake Mills/Lake Mills) struck out the side in the bottom of the fourth, and struck out two more in the bottom of the fifth to preserve the UW-W lead. Wooster came back in the bottom of the sixth to score two runs, one on an error and one on a double, to pull with within one at 5-4.
Wooster was able to tie the game in the bottom of the eighth after an error by the Warhawks allowed one run to score.
A double in the top of the ninth inning by pinch-hitter
Max Cordio (Whitewater/Whitewater), who later scored on a triple by
Sam Petrasko (Appleton/East), gave the Warhawks a 6-5 edge. Wooster went away quietly in the bottom of the ninth as relief pitcher
Ben Versnik (West Allis/Hale) was able to sit down the side in order.
Warhawk pitching combined for nine strikeouts while giving up nine hits. Hooper tallied the victory and moves to 1-0 for the season.
The sub-varsity team was also able to compete on Thursday in Florida in a game against Carthage. The Warhawks won 5-2.
The Warhawks will play again on Friday in Florida when they face Carthage College and Otterbein College in single games. The game against Otterbein is slated to start at 8 a.m. central time, while the first pitch against Carthage is schedule for 11 a.m. central.
