UW-Stevens Point jumped out to an early lead, starting with major decisions by Jake Wozniak at 165 and Dennis Reckelberg at 174. The Pointers bumped their lead to 14-0 when Ben Engelland, ranked sixth in Division III, pinned David Casper (Westby/Westby).
The Warhawk comeback began with third-ranked Karl Voeck (Madison/Memorial) got UW-W on the board with a decision at 197. UW-SP got those points back in the next match with Chad Gregory scoring two takedowns in the third period to win 6-4 and put Point ahead 17-3,
A decision by Max Oldenburg (Burbank, IL/Reavis) at 125 brought the Warhawks three points closer, 17-6, and when UW-SP forfeited at 133 the gap narrowed to 17-12. UW-W's Austin Bautista (Des Plaines, IL/Maine East), ranked number one in D3, raised his record to 32-1 with a 13-5 win at 141 pounds. Point's lead dwindled to 17-16.
Chris Magruder won by decision at 149 for the Pointers, putting the score at 20-16 with just 157 pounds left. Whitewater's Tom Trieloff (Janesville/Craig) won the match 14-6, with the major decision knotting the team score at 20-20.
The criteria for breaking a tie is number of matches won, and both teams won five so the tie stands.
A similar senario occured the last time Whitewater defeated Point, January 23, 2003 in Williams Center. The match ended in a 19-19 tie, but the Warhawks won six matches that evening to earn the victory, their most recent against the Pointers.
UW-Whitewater is 14-3-1 in dual meets, 3-0-1 in the WIAC. UW-Stevens Point is 15-3-1, and 3-1-1 in league competition.
UW-Whitewater will host Lawrence University, a WIAC member for the sport of wrestling, Friday at 7:00 in Williams Center.
