Lockridge Wins WIAC Long Jump Title

Cory Lockridge (Milwaukee/Rufus King) won the long jump title to lead UW-Whitewater in the first day of competition at the Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference Indoor Track and Field Championship hosted by UW-Stout in Menomonie, Wisconsin Saturday.

Team scores after Friday are:  UW-Oshkosh 43, UW-Stevens Point 40, UW-La Crosse 37, UW-Eau Claire 35, UW-Whitewater 33.5, UW-Platteville 22.5, UW-Stout 20, and UW-River Falls 3.  The WIAC is the premier track and field conference in Division III, with Oshkosh and Eau Claire 1-2 in the national ranking, Whitewater fourth, and Platteville twentieth.

Lockridge jumped 22-5.75 to win the long jump, a team season best performance.

In other finals Friday, day one of the two day meet, UW-W set season bests in the pole vault, the 5000, and the distance medley relay.  Tom Weigand (West Allis/West Allis Hale) placed sixth in the pole vault at 14-10, and teammate Dane Dzubinski (Brookfield/Waukesha North) tied that height, but Weigand placed on the number of jumps/misses.  Dave Schneekloth (Seymour/Seymour) also ran UW-W's best time of the season in the 5000, placing thirteenth in 15:22.79.  The distance medley relay, timed in 10:30.87 for another season best, finished fifth.  That quartet included Kyle O'Rourke, Joe Bailey (Hartford/Hartford Union), Joe Dixon (Milwaukee/Rufus King), and Mathias Werve (Kenosha/Tremper).   Darin Kuhnke (Adams Friendship/Adams Friendship) added more team points with his fifth place in the pentathlon, totaling 3,056. 

In the other final held Friday, Joe Schneider (Wausau, WI/Wausau) placed ninth in the shot put at 49-7.5.

UW-W also notched three season bests, and qualified for the finals, in five preliminary heats Friday.  Isiah Gray (Milwaukee/Brown Deer) had the top time in the 400 with 49.42, Ernest Downing (Cleveland, OH/Glenville) moved on the finals in the 200 with a season best 22.69, Matt Kovnesky (Fort Atkinson/Fort Atkinson) ran a 1:55..45 to advance to the 800 finals, and Brain Gensrick moved on to the finals in the 55 hurdles with a 7.92, also a team season best.

Josh Ireland (South Milwaukee/South Milwaukee) produced a 6.65 in the 55 meters, the best time on the team this season, but will not advance to Saturday's final.
