UW-W Defeats Mother Nature, Loses to Washington

After more than a little horse trading and juggling (at the same time), UW-Whitewater was able to get in a game Thursday night.  The Warhawks were scheduled to play Saint Mary's University (MN) at the Metrodome in Minneapolis, but with UW-W already on the road a snow storm hit Minnesota and Saint Mary's was unable to make it.  During the bus ride UW-W was able to salvage the trip thanks to the University of Washington agreeing to serve as Whitewater's season opening opponent.  Washington was in town for a tournament at the Metrodome and was going to use the facility anyway for practice, so the game was set up.  UW-W also hastily arranged, through the connections of assistant coach Dave Perchinsky, to get a sub-varsity game in with Dakota Technical College, giving more of UW-W's roster their first taste of action in 2009.

The result, of the game that will count on both team's record, was a 16-2 win by Division I Washington over the Warhawks.

Whitewater actually led in the game, when leadoff batter Ben Kuhlmann (Minneapolis, MN/Southwest) homered to left center in the bottom of the first.  The Huskies came back with six in the second, three in the third, two in the fourth and three more in the top of the sixth before Whitewater got its second tally when Kuhlmann led off the inning with a singlemoved to second on a Sam Petrasko (Appleton/East) single, moved to third on a double play, and scored on a wild pitch.

Kuhlmann not only scored both runs, but also had three of Whitewater's five hits.  Whitewater used five pitchers in the game, and Kale Olson (Rochester, MN/Century) pitched a scoreless seventh, giving up just one hit.

The Huskies totaled eighteen hits, seven for extra bases.  UW also used five pitchers, with Forrest Snow picking up the win with five innings of two-hit pitching.  Snow struck out eight and didn't walk a batter.

The Warhawks will try the "Metrodome thing" again March 6, with a twinbill against the University of Saint Thomas set to begin at 10:00 p.m.  The first home game for UW-W will be April 7 at 2:00, with Carroll University visiting Prucha Field for a pair of games.
