Warhawks Send Blue Devils Back to Menomonie

The eleventh ranked Warhawks limited UW-Stout to nineteen second half points, and the lowest total by a Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference opponent, on the way to a 63-40 win over UW-Stout Saturday afternoon in Kachel Gym.

The story of the game was defense.  The Warhawks limited the Blue Devils to just 26 percent shooting, and only 18 percent from three point distance.  Meanwhile, the Warhawks shot 40 percent from the field and 47 percent from beyond the three point arc.  The Warhawks UW-W took the lead for good with 16:15 remaining in the first half on a Heidi Sonntag (Milwaukee/Wisconsin Lutheran) three point shot, making the score 6-4.  Sonntag's shot sparked a 12-2 Warhawk scoring streak. 

The smallest margin in the second half was with 19:02 remaining in the half, 34-20.  The Warhawks made another run, 9-0 starting at 16:12 with another Sonntag three and ending on  Dana Thompson (Belleville/Belleville) layup to make the score 49-24. The largest lead by the Warhawks was with 3:40 remaining in the game, 62-35.

Tiffany Morton (Beloit/Memorial) added to her stock of double-doubles with 12 points and a game high 12 rebounds.  Morton now has 12 double-doubles on the year, and 26 in her career.  She is just one behind Vanessa Rieder (27, 1997-2000) in the UW-W record books.  Kelsey Hendrickson (Monroe/Monroe) led both teams in scoring with 13 points, eleven in the first half, while Morton and Sonntag added 12.  All of Sonntag's came on threes.  Stout's Julia Hirssig and Tricia VanVreede paced the Blue Devils with 11 points each,and Hirssig pulled down eight rebounds. 

Whitewater had 50 rebounds to Stout's 34, and Whitewater had 18 offensive boards to 12 for UW-S. 

UW-W improves to 18-3 on the season and 9-3 in the Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference.  UW-S falls to 12-9 and 7-5 in the WIAC.

The next game for UW-W will be Wednesday, February 11 at UW-Platteville for a 7:00 game.  The next home game will be Saturday, February 14 against UW-Stevens Point at 5:00 p.m.  The February 14 game is Think Pink Night as well as Senior night.
