#3 Warhawks Boost Record to 16-1 with Win Over Platteville

UW-Whitewater, ranked third in the national Division III polls, came back from a halftime deficit to defeat UW-Platteville 76-62 Wednesday evening in Kachel Gym of Williams Center in Whitewater, Wisconsin.

Platteville used an early 7-0 run to take an 11-4 lead, and led by eight twice, the last time at 26-16 with 9:41 left in the half.  The Pioneers used a 26-15 rebounding margin to forge their lead, with ten of the boards coming on the offensive glass.  UW-P led 36-32 at intermission.

UW-W took a different approach in the second half, starting with a 13-0 run to take a 43-38 lead on a layup by Dana Thompson (Belleville/Belleville) at 17:28.  The Warhawks steadily added to their lead, twice expanding it to 19 points, 72-53 at 3:53 and 76-57 with 1:18 remaining.

Whitewater's 44-26 second half margin was keyed by shooting 60% from the floor.  The Warhawks wound up shooting 50% from the field and limiting Platteville to 37%.  UW-W's defense was also aided by seven blocked shots, five by Tiffany Morton (Beloit/Memorial).

The Warhawks were led by their post tandem of Morton and Thompson, both with 12 points.  Thompson also grabbed a team-high eight rebounds, with Morton right behind with seven.  The only other Warhawk in double figures was Heidi Sonntag (Milwaukee/Wisconsin Lutheran) with 11 points, while point guard Kelsey Hendrickson (Monroe/Monroe) dished out eight assists with just two turnovers. 

Platteville had three players in double figures, led by forward Charity Stotmeister's 14.  Dru Schneider and Brianna Klaas added 11 apiece, and Schneider contributed a game-high ten rebounds and a team-high five assists.

UW-Whitewater is 16-1 overall and 7-1 in the Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference.  Platteville is 5-11 overall and 2-6 in league play. 

Whitewater will host UW-Superior Saturday, January 24 at 3:00 in Kachel Gym of Williams Center.
