Warhawks Score Season High in Win Over Stout

Maybe it took a while to warm up off the bus, or just warm up period, but for the last thirty minutes UW-Whitewater, ranked seventh in the nation in Division III, continued to pull away from UW-Stout on the way to a 99-71 win in Menomonie.

Stout stayed with the Warhawks for the first ten minutes, holding their last lead at 16-15 on a jumper by Edy Jensen with 12:10 left in the first half.  Whitewater followed with a 17-0 run, capped by a Matt Goodwin (Milwaukee/King) jumper to grab a double digit lead at 32-16 with 7:16 on the clock.  UW-W steadily added to the margin to lead 46-27 at halftime. 

 

 The momentum stayed with UW-W in the second half as the Warhawks continued to roll, eventually building a 35 point lead, 83-48 with 7:50 on a Chris Vines (Milwaukee/Washington) layup.

UW-W has scored ninety-plus points, increasing the output, in every game of 2009, four straight (90, 92 96, 99). 

Whitewater shot .618 from the field, second only to a .619 in a win over Oshkosh exactly one month ago.  UW-W also hit 55% of its three point attempts (10-18).  The Warhawks also doubled up the Blue Devils at the line, hitting 21-27 (78%) to Stout's 8-13 (62%).  UW-W also had a 36-23 rebound advantage.

Five Warhawks scored in double figures, led by Myles McKay (Menomonee Falls/Menomonee Falls)'s 22 points.  Matt Goodwin (Milwaukee/King) added 15, Kori Vernon (Madison/Memorial) and Chris Vines (Milwaukee/Washington) 14, and Dustin Mitchell (Lac Du Flambeau/Lakeland) 10.  Point guard Phil Negri (Minocgua/Lakeland) led both teams with six assists, and committed just two turnovers.  Vernon topped both teams with seven rebounds. 

Stout was led by Erci Hostetter's 14 points, including 4-7 from beyond the arc.  Jerrod Buchholtz chipped in with 12 and Jerrel Enerson-Matthews 11. 

UW-W coach Pat Miller was able to use fourteen players in the game, twelve of whom broke in to the scoring column.

UW-W, 14-2 overall and 6-1 in the Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference, will travel to UW-Platteville Wednesday night.  The next home game for the Warhawks will be Saturday, January 24 at 1:00 with UW-Superior visiting Kachel Gym in Williams Center.

UW-Stout is 5-10 overall and 0-7 in the WIAC.
